  1. Hi everyone,

I have both Primo Prassi (came with my DVD burner) and Roxio Easy CD Creator.

When I loaded Primo, it forced me to uninstall Roxio, and I did, to try out Primo. Primo has worked fine for the DVD's I've burned, but I've had problems with the CD writer software. It said it couldn't write some songs because they weren't a specific format, and later reported errors and wouldn't complete the CDs. I reinstalled Roxio and did the same CD's with Roxio - no problem. Roxio did not complain about having Primo installed.

The only advantage with the Primo DVD writer (that I could see) is that it allows you to overburn slightly, if you need to. I've never done this though - maybe Roxio does it as well.

Questions - Is Primo Prassi a better DVD writer or are they really similar? Any advantages to one or the other?

IS it a problem having both installed or should I just choose one or the other? Possibly I could keep Roxio for CD's and use the Primo for DVD's?

Thanks for any advice or comments!

Use PrimoDVD for both... get rid of Roxio EZCDC. I did, and I've never been happier with the results.

I use Nero Burning ROM and DVD IT!, I also use other progs sometimes.

Roxio products have some setting they require that no other program can exist with.

  4. Thanks for the replies, Mpb and Greg 12.

I was hoping to stay with either Prassi or ECDC because I already have those. I have read a lot of people here like Nero, though, so I guess that is an option.

Mpb, what is wrong with ECDC?

Roxio has major compatibility problems with newer DVDR drives. Often with it installed, you can't even see your drive on the system bus. It also "infests" the registry with its own DLLs and settings, and makes burning with anything else impossible. If you're like me and you use the best burning program for the job each time, this is wholly unacceptable. For example, with DVD5's, copying entirely with DVD Decrypter is not unusual, including the re-burn. For VCD and SVCD, I get the best results burning to my Plexwriter secondary drive with Ulead. For DVD-ROM or DVD Video, I use my Pioneer 104 with PrimoDVD. For CD-R full of MP3, audio discs, data CD-R, etc, I use the Plexwriter with PrimoDVD.

If you install Roxio ECDC, you can't do any of that. It can't burn DVD or SVCD at all, and it's not as good a VCD burner as Ulead. Its only real advantage is a nice interface for CD-R audio and mp3.

  6. Thanks Mpb, overall ECDC doesn't sound too promising. I wonder what the problem was with Prassi burning the audio cd - that was myh only problem with Prassi. Also, it doesn't seem to let me adjust the burn speed.

I didn't know you could rip and burn with DVD Decrypter. I usually use Smartripper and used DVD Decrypter only once when I got locked up and couldn't rip Dances with Wolves. Neither program would work - and both at the same point.

Which Ulead do you use, Factory or Workshop?

I use Ulead DVD movie factory. Somehow I can't get the same elegant and reliable function out of UDW. I haven't done an audio CD yet with PrimoDVD, so indeed that might not be all that great... but heck, you can just burn the audio disc with WinXP if you need to.

  8. Hi Mpb,

Well I should have listened to your warning, but I burned a DVD with ECDC. It would not play in my regular DVD player. My player has played DVDs burned with both Prassi and Movie Factory. You'd think I was fron Wisconsin - but I see what you mean now.

I agree about Movie Factory and DVD Workshop. I know that Workshop has more features, but it's harder to use for me. Factory seems very intuitive. I also like Spruce.

    Thanks again,
    Deb
