  1. What is the preferred format for DV-AVI files: type 1 or type 2? Also, I have a utility from Ulead that will convert back and forth between them, as some software like Windows Movie Maker requires type 2 and Ulead DVD Movie Factory requires type 1. Will this conversion reduce quality or can I convert back and forth freely and keep the original DV file quality?

Really the "preferred format" is just what the application expects or requires. If you are using Premiere, the DV needs to be in Type 2. ULEAD products use Type 1 as standard. Both formats have the audio interleaved with the video, Type 2 adds a separate audio track to the file.

I can't vouch for the specific converter you are using, but you should be able to go back and forth with no degradation to the file.
