After building my first system, I started ripping and burning DVDs. I haven't any problems except for speed.

I am using Smartripper and it never rips above 2x even though the drive is 16x. All the components are brand new, including the dvd drive. I get the same results with the DVD burner

    My computer is:
    Pentium 4 D850MV MB
    1.7 CPU
    80 GB 7,200 RPM HD
    256 RDRAM
    16x CDRW
    16x DVD
    1x DVDR/RAM Burner
    Windows 2000 PE

I upgraded from W98 SE and now I cant change the drive settings without going into the BIOS. What a pain. Anyway, I changed the DMA settings, but it didn't do any good

I don't even know how to activate auto insert notification in this OS or if it would help.

If anyone has any suggestions, I would really appreciate it. This is starting to get irritating.

how fast a dvd rips can depend on the encryption keys the dvd has. for example my pioneer 104 could rip behind enemy lines at up to 5x, while it could only rip the score at 2.1x. but if you find your drive rips all dvd's slowly try going to "my computer", and right click on the dvd drive. select properties and see can you change the reading speed.

  4. Hi Dafoe,

I have a similar problem ripping with Smartripper. It never rips beyond 1.1 speed. I also recently upgraded from Windows millenium to windows 2000 Pro, and on Millenium, Smartripper worked at speeds up to 6x. I tried all the different methods suggested on all the forums but nothing seems to work. I believe the problem might be in the Win 2000 PE and how smart ripper reacts to it. I will be changing my operating system to Windows XP pro over the week in the hopes that this wil fix the problem. I will let you know how it goes. If I still have the problem on XP i will be switching back over to Millenium (even though i hate Millenium) as it takes so much longer to rip.

    My computer operates on:

    Windows 2000 PE
    Pentium 4
    1.6 CPU
    60 GB
    503 RDRAM
    16x cdrw

Not hardly... what you are doing is NOT possible.

Now, back to the main topic,

I run SmartRipper with W2000P, too. I can rip at average speeds of about 5.8X. I have all my IDE channels on "DMA, If Available". I don't think that this is an OS issue. If I had to guess, I would say that it is the way you have things set up. Or, it could be the condition of the disk. The dirtier the disk, the more the error correction has to work (I have experienced this one). One question for you concerning all your tests: Was the "ripped" disk the same in all cases?

  6. I also had a problem with slow ripping with smartripper. I switched over to Windows xp, from win 2000 and I am now ripping at speeds of 4x to 6x (depending on the dvd). I don't know if this will help you Dafoe, but I am satisfied with the results. Good Luck!

I read so posts about slow ripping and other problems with Windows XP and 2000. I use Windows 98 First Edition and
smartripper and the average two hour movie takes 5-7 minutes to rip. Why don't you switch back to Win 98.

Had exact same problem. XP had somehow taken off the DMA setting and placed the 'Secondary IDE Channel' setting for the DVD ROM (slave) to PIO mode. My rips had dropped from 9x on WIN ME to 1.5x with XP. Even putting it in DMA 'if available' in Device Manager and re-booting did not actually shift the DVD ROM from PIO mode.

The fix was to de-install the secondary IDE Channel, re-boot and let XP automatically re-install the channel and DVD ROM. Voila, the DMA setting took and I am back to ripping at 10x.

    Hope this helps
    Cheers
