  1. Can somebody tell me the advantages and disadvantages of encoding audio from AVI separately from the video, is splitting, encoding and then multiplexing (correct word?) thetwo together better than encoding the whole AVI as one?

    Thanks in advance, Dom.

  2. Well, there is always at least one disadvantage to doing anything the more difficult or time-consuming way, and that disadvantage is that - it's more difficult or time-consuming! There may be other disadvantages, but none that come to mind right now.

Advantages to encoding the audio seperately; there are several, but the main one that I can think of is that I take take the wav into SoundForge and do quite a bit with it.

    - Time Stretch it (increase or decrease the run time to synchronize with the video).

    - Noise Filter it (to reduce or remove static, popping, etc).

    - Apply Effects (such as "simulated stereo" for some of those mono films I record from TCM - it did wonders for a mono capture of Forbidden Planet when moderately applied).

I'm sure others could add to this, but generally the stand-alone audio editors are far superior in quality and features.
As Churchill famously predicted when Chamberlain returned from Munich proclaiming peace in his time: "You were given the choice between war and dishonor. You chose dishonor, and you will have war."
