  1. I have had my DVD-R for about 4 weeks now and have had great success with my pioneer 444 player, but had no luck with cheaper players (they just refused to play)

To cut a long story short I tried different disks, different authoring etc etc, but still no luck. Anyway I ended up sending a disk to the lab at work to see why it wouldn't play, and it seems that Nero (which I had used to burn all the images with) was inserting a field in the UDF 1.02 disk layout which these cheaper players don't like. (if you need to know the exact details post back here)

After finding this out I actually burned the disk with DVDit and bingo, everything started to work.

Moral of the story is if you want the most compatible DVD-Rs, don't burn with Nero.

yes could you give me the exact details.
i have the same problem , if i burn dvd's using nero they wont play on my machine (aiwa xd-dv370) but do play on other peoples machines.what i have found is : if the machine is under a year old they play no probs, but if they machine is older than a year old they dont play, or some do some dont.
only way i can get around this is i use vod instant cd/dvd.
then all dvd's play fine in all machines.
i wonder if nero are aware of this problem??

  3. Here we go, but I dont take any responsibility for people being able to understand it.

DVD Specification for Read-Only Disc / Part 2. File System Specification section 2.6.7 Logical Volume Descriptor. There is a field in this table 'Logical Volume Contents Use' which is a pointer to the rootICB. Most early software ignored this field and assumed a value of 0, however Nero writes 0xa into here, and hence the pointers are off.

This isn't a bug with Nero, it's perfectly valid, just it makes it less compatible with players that are out on the market at the moment. When there are new versions of Nero every month or so, and I have never had an update for my DVD player, it would make more sense to alter Nero.

    Just my opinion.
