  1. have you got tmpgenc set to load asf files?

load the file into a text editor
and look for this inside it

    AR-å1-úñ á+H÷ ¤ D i v X ; - ) A u d i o 1 6 k b p s ,
    2 2 k H z , m o n o a M i c r o s o f t M P E G - 4 V i d e o
    C o d e c V 3 MP436&_uÄf-ª+ ¬ b+l2vn *f é

that's what i found inside the asf file i've got here

  3. what text editor do u use to open such a big file?
notepad doesnt do it, even word doesnt open files bigger than
32mb, and wordpad would start opening it slowly - 1%......2%..... -
goes up to 5% and then goes back to 0% and so on...

  5. Don't know if this might help. I've used it a few times to identify movies that wouldn't play or played oddly.

    MovieID: http://www.divx-digest.com/software/movieid.html

There are more info viewers here:

divxfix program would say it isnt avi either.
BUT it is a movie file since i can play it wmp and windvd.
so looks like the extention is wrong, thus there no clue as to its
    movie format.
how can i find it out? what program can i use to see its properties,
like fps, bitrate and the like?
I have the same problems with AVI burned with mode2cdmaker.
The people that wrote that piece of software doesn't write anywhere that if you copy avi from a mode2cdmaker made CD, it will have all the "headers" messed up...
So, according to the RIFF header it's a CDXA and VirtualDub tries to open it like a MPEG.
I've tried to simply remove the CDXA header, but the AVI header is not correct...You should have to edit and correct the header...
I don't know/don't have time do to this, and so I must re-download the files...
