APEX has been including VCD in all of there players for some time now. What they haven't been doing is paying for the right to do so. In this country VCD playback is a licensed feature. Seems that the current rights holders are a little miffed that APEX has not been sharing in the feast. SO, that is why you will not see VCD support in ANY of the new DVD players from APEX.
Here is a copy of the e-mail that I sent the APEX rep concerning this. It confirms what I have said, although not directly.

Subject: What happened to VCD support?
I have a question? What happened to VCD support on the AD-1100W? I have allot of VCDs that I have collected over the years, as well as, home movies in VCD format. I purchased an 1100W back in January at Wal-Mart and it played the VCDs fine. I just purchased a second for my parents and it will not play any VCDs at ALL. Why has support for VCDs been removed? Unless there is a firmware update or something I can do to get VCDs working, I am going to return the new player and purchase a different model. Why cripple an excellent player?
A prompt reply will be appreciated,
Moon1234

So is everyone else paying for this or could we expect many manufacturers to drop VCD compatibility?

Well Hell, the chinese all the time let VCD's and DVD's sell on there open market of movies not even released yet and where are they, doing not a damn thing, I guess if you are selling the machines or movies to america its different than to your own countrymen. Why did the chinese put out the VCD, cause in 1995-96 they were not about to pay the high price to Phillips and Sony for the rights to manufacture DVD players and if I understand correctly most of the cheaper companies still do not pay the rights to manufacture these machines still to Philips or Sony, which is making companies like Sony, Philips, JVC, Toshiba, RCA, Dennon, Yamaha and the other 10 or so japan companies mad at us to for still importing these models, oh sright APEX IS manufactured in China, I guess they don't need any tanks rolling through their walls do they.
