It looks to me to be from the source. I don't mean the LD, but the film itself when it was transferred. I could be wrong though. I've noticed that type of stuff on mine. Look a few pages back where I posted some pictures of the X-Wings heading towards the Battle of Yavin.

you might be right about that. take a look at the last two images though. those blocks make up about 90% of the noise I'm seeing on my captures and it comes up in every third or fourth frame. I'm thinking it's either the player itself or a bad copy of the LD's.

the white specks look like the start of laser rot, or a defect in the pressing. as they're CAV, can you identify a frame with a mark and pause it? if the mark is always there it's rot or a defect, if it comes and goes it's a read error (could be dirt, laser tracking etc) if it's not there again it could be random RF interference (fridge, hairdryer, lightswitch)
The black randomly shaped things are dirt on the master. you could try and clean them up frame by frame, but it's a huge job.
oh, the black mark on R2 in starwarscap03.jpg is not good. that definitely looks like rot (affecting more than just one pit) i'd capture as soon as possible.
The white specks with colour blocks around them are interesting. looks like a definite fault with "dodgy" area around it. trying checking those paused as well, see what you get. -
Looks like has been described as "laser rot" to me. Not really anything you can do about it other than to get new discs. But since they are all about the same age, one would expect all the discs to be experiencing similar problems.
To answer the question about the PAL discs...
As far as I know, they are the PAL/CLV equivalent of the Definitive set... at least as much so as the "faces" edition is. They are widescreen, THX, PAL, and CLV, so really they are more like PAL versions of the "faces" set.
They are German language. Since I haven't played them yet, I do not know if there is an English language track. I don't really care since I will be using the audio from the (English language) Definitive set. They come up on www.ebay.de on a regular basis. Look for the set with red letters on the cover.
I will give more info after I have a chance to play them.

thanks for all your input guys. from what I've read about laser rot, it can sometimes be the result of a manufacturing defect -- an isolated incident rather than affecting a whole shipment. this would make sense because not all of the LD's in the set have this problem. I haven't checked the other two movies, but I know the other two ANH discs are fine.
Oh well, at least I borrowed these LD's. I guess I'll have to check out ebay for a set of my own...Liberate te ex Inferis -
this page is handy to identify the versions.

dphirschler, PAL discs can only carry one audio track.
Ah, these ones?

They're really really cheap too! considering the quality the video will be they're a bargain. wish i'd bought them instead of the NTSC THX ones now! -
Just saw this on ebay I would buy them but my LD player does not read PAL

they're special editions and i own these. i'll have to give a comparitive opinion and some frame grabs from the PAL and NTSC versions.

Hi guys :P
** DC10Plus card (HW MJPEG capture 640 x 480) then boarders cropped.
-vhelp -
That does look great. Is that from the Original Version LD's or the Special Edition LD's? Hopefully it is from the Original Version LD's.
Mythos -
is it just an amazing coincidence or did you pick the same frame i put up here http://www.geocities.com/flaninacupboard/seg22.htm on purpose?
It's good, but i think mine has a little more colour and contrast. -
Morning all.

The only thing I don't like about the DC10+ card is that our NTSC version is
restricted to 640 (instead of 720) And, for the life of me, I don't know why
they limited it to 640 in the first place, when you got the PAL version going to
720
Plus, with this card, there is truely ZERO noise (as I've often said of this card)
and color balance is more smooth.
.
My Winfast TV-2000 XP "Expert" card is great too, but still exhibits some
noise (at least on my pc setup it does) and so, I'm toying around w/ this
card again.
The side note to all this "color-space" issue is that even though the color
may look great in a pic, once the source .AVI file is encoded to 4:2:0 color-space,
it won't matter then, how its gonna look on your monitor. It will look off-color
or lighter, for obvious reasons, due to the limit in YUV (if I'm accurate) by
using the 4:2:0 MPEG-2 default that all encoders use.
.
My guess is that all TVs are 4:2:0, and that's why (even though the final
MPEG-2 looks lighter on a monitor) it looks darker/richer on a TV set. So,
you can't always to by your MPEG encodes on your monitor.
However, I'd like to know how they get the DVD (VOB) source to look more
like a 4:2:2, when viewed on a pc monitor. The color space is a bit more
richer (ie, more like "flaninacupboard's" pic)
Oh, yes it's from the SE version :P
I'll try and pop in an Original version when I get the chance. Those are
much more lighter looking. That's NTSC for you all.
Anyway.. that's just another one of my theories.
I'm looking for a scene to encode, for a sample clip to U/L
-vhelp -
just popped home for lunch and my original New Hope is finally here. had a quick spin and i'm very pleased. lukes lightsabre is blue (SE's it's really pale, almost white) the jawas load R2D2 in the afternoon, not the evening, and when luke looks at the two suns, they're actually bright, and you can actually see lukes' face! it's all the way i remember it now.
I'll have to put up some comparisons tonight!
*smiles happily in weird star wars loving trance* -
Hi flan,
I hadden't realized that, about the scene w/ Luke and the two suns. I'll have to look at the both, my SE and Original versions and see if their is a difference.
Could be an NTSC vs. PAL thing too though
.
I just wish I had the perfect Analog capture card that produce video images
w/out any noize. Only my ADVC-100 and DC10+ produce zero noise. But,
w/ an analog capture card, you have a slight edge in quality, due to the exgtra
colorspace values (when captured either uncompressed or decent codec, for
instance my dc10+ 's MJPEG) Anyways..
Well, I'm still playing around w/ mine.

I made the best Star Wars to DVD set. it's so dam easy people. I just used my Panasonic E80 home DVD recorder. i have found that it's better then my ATI AIW and my Dazzle 2.

Spiderman,
I know virtually nothing about standalone recorders. Could you provide a little info. on the process. Can you take the audio and video and tranfer it to a computer so that you can use it with DVD-Lab and other authoring software? Can you make both 4:3 and 16:9 recordings?
Sorry for the basic questions. I'm browsing the standalone forum to find some answers. If you could provide any links, that would be great, as the searching as pulling up a ton of information that will take a long time to sort through.
Thanks.
Mythos -
"Mythos2002" I think the Pioneer 510 can do 16:9 may be the Panasonic can do it. You can take the video out and use dvd-lab. TMPG ot MPEG2VCR. I have talk to some people that have both Pioneer 510 and Panasonic E80 they say Panasonic has the better picture. Other will say Pioneer. I think different's are very small but there.
When I made the SW LD's to DVD with my Dazzle 2 and ATI AIW on the PC on the left side on the Pc monitor there was a black line not recording the 4:3 just right. Panasonic recording's 4:3 right I did not see the black line on the monitor.
This is a great message board for DVD recorder's
http://www.avsforum.com/
Keep in mind recording at 4:3 is fine that's what he LD put out. i watch them on my friend HDTV 16:9 and they look fine no problem's. I'm not picky when it come's to making a true 16:9 as I can set the TV to display it right.
If you want to get the E85 go to www.macmall.com and no I'm not a mac person LOL. They and bestbuy are the only one's that have them right now. The E80 is cheeper as it's last year model. Also you will keep the closed caption subtitle's with the Panasonic DVD recorder. -

Thanks for the info. Spiderman. I'll check it out. As far as the black line on the side. I noticed that too on my monitor, but not on the TV. I believe that line is for overscan and will never show up on the TV.
Thanks.

One thing I find the Panasonic E80 editting very very easy the book that come's with it is just plain bad. But once you learn it. You can edit in your sleep.

Just thought I'd throw in my 2 cents. I'm now finishing my compilation of ANH. It has the audio/video of the "Faces" set, and the commentary track from the Def. Col. I have a submenu that links to each specific chapter.
I used a Pioneer 704, connected to my Sony DCR-TVR33 camcorder with analog/digital conversion. I captured it in Sony Vegas 4.0. The picture is anamorphic and progressive (using 3-2-2-3 pulldown). I took the digital PCM soundtrack, created 5 .wav files using Pro-Logic II decoding, and created a new 5.1 DD soundtrack (takes up far less space).
I used DVD-Lab Pro to put the project together (I needed it for the commentary track. I LOVE this program! )
SW is so nice to watch now.Eventually, after I finish ESB and ROTJ, I will make one (or two) more discs with all the extras (making's of, interviews, "Troops", etc.)
I want the Star Wars O-OT on DVD, dammit! -
I'm going to have a go at capturing my laserdiscs as well. I'm going to capture from my old cheapy Magnavox LD player, composite video (no s-video on this one) with a Leadtek 2000XP Deluxe, capture to avi with Huffyuv. My confusion is how to do the conversion to mpeg2 for dvd. I'm not a total noob with video, dvd backup and such, but I haven't done much with capturing and all the talk about IVTC, decomb, cropping, interlace, deinterlace, dot crawl, etc. has my head swimming. I'll be using TMPGEnc for convert to mpeg2. My beg, grovel, plea is could someone post or PM me an avisynth script that they have used successfully? I'm using version 2.5 of avisynth.
Please? You're my only hope.

"How do you make the DD 5.1 sound track? Thanks"
Sony Vegas. You take the 5 mono .wav's, and put them on individual tracks. You go into 5.1 mode, assign each .wav to a speaker, set the crossover level (I set it at 80), and then Vegas will make the .ac3 file for you.
You can ever do your own panning from speaker to speaker (with a joystick as well), and supplement or add effects to each individual speaker.
The only problem I encountered was that, after making the 5 .wav's, they were shortened, which increased the pitch. Vegas allowed me to adjust the length and pitch back to normal.
"I'm going to capture from my old cheapy Magnavox LD player, composite video (no s-video on this one)"
I've not read this whole thread, but I found that the composite cable gave me a slightly better picture. LD is a composite format, and the quality of the S-video depends on the decoder inside. Since my digital camcorder's S-video converter is more current than the one in my LD player, it made more sense to have the camcorder do the work.
"imho I think thast a bit pointless.

Well, it's not pointless for people who have no PLII decoder, like me. What you require your PLII receiver for, my DVD will do for anyone with a Dolby Digital receiver. Secondly, the .ac3 files take up far less space than the PCM tracks, leaving space for lower video compression.I want the Star Wars O-OT on DVD, dammit! -
I have finally captured the closed captioning from the Star Wars movies. I used the SE versions because the dialog was considerably shortened on the original release. I have no idea what the CC looks like on the "faces" set. I also haven't check out the LD for CC yet. I know it's there, but not how good it is.
The CC on the SE version looked to be word for word verbatim. It even had some dialog that I missed when watching the movie. For instance when uncle Owen tells C-3PO to shut up, he says "Shutting up, sir." However, I also realize that there will be certain edits that I will need to make. A great example is when the swamp thing spits out R2-D2 and Luke tells him he is lucky he doesn't taste very good. He is supposed to say "You're lucky you don't taste good."
I was attracted to the idea of using the CC for building subtitles because I could not find an accurate script of any of the movies. Perfect example of this is the ANH scripts you can easily find on the web. In the movie, Darth Vader instructs his men to "Tear this ship apart until you've found those plans. And bring me the passengers. I want them alive." In the scripts he tells them to "Bring me the ambassador. I want her alive." There are many other inaccuracies similar to that.
So, I am planning on moving forward with these CC scripts. They are pretty much rough and unedited at this point. All the proper nouns need capitalization. I have done a little work on TESB just cleaning it up. Anyways, I will have them up on my website by tonight if anyone wants to stop by and grab them.
