Hi All,
I have a Compaq notebook running Win Me & was happily capturing DV data from my Sony TRV30 into Pinnacle Studio. The IEEE 1394 port is via a PCMCIA card added to the machine.
A week ago I decided to upgrade the OS to Win XP. Now during capture, I see lots of pink-white colored blocks in an irregular pattern on the video. The audio is also garbled with screeching sounds. Thinking this to be a problem with Pinnacle, I tried Win Moviemaker with the same result. However, Ulead reports that the 'File is copyrighted or corrupted'. This obviously can't be 'cos these are video tapes I shot on my own & all of my tapes give the same results, but play well when connected to the TV.
I have searched every possible site & forums with no solution. Many suggested I replace the Texas Instruments IEEE 1394 driver with the MSDV driver but I couldn't accomplish it in XP ! After spending close to a week, hope someone can bring me out of my misery...![]()
Thanks in advance.

It is my understanding that notebooks should never be upgraded to Windows 2000 or WindowsXP. Many have done it successfully but because of the various chipsets and particular components within notebook computers, it is not always compatible with newer OS'es. Windows95, 98, 98SE are fundamentally the same but Windows2000,XP are NT based and therefore different. When manufacturer release their notebooks with WindowsXP or 2000 they are already guaranteeing compatibility with those OS, otherwise you are taking your chances.
While desktop computers are manufactured in large quantities notebooks are nowhere near such production numbers. This means that desktop components (motherboards, graphic cards, hardrives, etc.) are better tested for compatibility and standarization. Notebooks on the otherhand have more proprietary chips, and components because there is more customization done for each company. There is less standarization in notebook components than in desktop components.
Compaq is also know to be a computer manufacturer that repeatedly has proprietary components in both notebooks and desktop making them less compatible for hardware or software upgrades. This means that drivers that commonly work on another computer may need to be changed slightly to make them work in Compaq computers. The problem may not lie in WindowsXP but in the Compaq hardware. Perhaps you can get help from Compaq on this, otherwise I recommend that you go back to your Windows98SE OS or whatever was installed.
The other option is that your installation did not go well: you kept some programs that interfere with WindowsXP. Best way is to clean your whole drive and install WindowsXP then re-install every program one by one. I would be more suspecious that the problem lies more with Compaq hardware than WindowsXP itself. -
Hi VideoMann,
Really appreciate the time you have taken to reply. I actually went thru the upgrade from Win Me to XP after checking the Compaq site. The site does list problems after the upgrade process but none seemed serious. Atleast none mentioned IEEE 1394/PCMCIA issues. Anyway, I thoroughly tested every bit of my notebook but couldn't see problems with any other drivers/devices (ext. CD-RW, display drivers, touchpad, scanner, webcam...).
However, since you feel a clean XP install is the way to go, lemme try it tonite & see. This could be the reason as I chose the 'upgrade' option rather than the 'fresh install' while upgrading to Win XP.
