I need some serious help..I have installed nero 5.5.2.4., then had probs, uninstalled and rebooted, then my 2 cd drives (dvd and cd-rw) disappeared, gone. In device manager it says that the 2 devices cannot start because "cannot start because configure info is incomplete or damaged in registry (code 19)" so the first time this happened I reinstalled windows, now I installed the 5.5.5.1 version and the same thing happens. Has anyone else had this prob??? the 2 cd drive just completely disappear except for device manager, and I cannot do anything with them. The 2 drives are an external cd-rw(Iomega predator) and the dvd drive is internal(pioneer). I am using win XP and have never really had any problems before this. Please someone help!!!

Go into device manager and uninstall one of the devices. Reboot. See if it detects and reinstalls it correctly. If that works, do the same with the other.
Nero is up to 5.5.9.0, installing the update patch ( www.nero.com )probably wouldn't do any harm.As Churchill famously predicted when Chamberlain returned from Munich proclaiming peace in his time: "You were given the choice between war and dishonor. You chose dishonor, and you will have war." -
Thanks, but I have already tried this, I uninstalled then reinstalled this, but when it booted back up, it simply installed the device, but gave me the same error. I want to edxit the registry, because what harm can I really do at this point, as it stands right now, I will have to reload windows anyway, so might as well try something.

Has your ASPI drivers been upset ?
http://www.adaptec.com/worldwide/support/driverdetail.html?cat=%2fOperating+System%2fM...=aspi_v470.exe
see also the /FORCE command in readme.txt -
I do not believe that the ASPI drivers were affected. Is there no one else out there that this has happened to?? Does anyone know where I could find and remove the registry info for these drives and anything that would affect them? I tried to find some registry info on the web but nothing was specific enough. I just want to get it back to working condition. Thanks.

From what you are discribing, it sounds like you have them both setup as slave or master, or maybe have the IDE cable going the wrong way. The red stripe should be facing the power connector or on pin #1 of the IDE connector.
What IDE channel are the drives connected to? Which one is the master/slave?
What I would do is to leave the HD on IDE#1, and install the CD-RW on IDE#2 as the master. Make sure to disconnect the DvD drive by pulling out the power connector, and try to reboot. See if Windows can properly detect the drive. If it does, then make sure that the DvD drive is setup as slave on IDE#2.
In your bios, make sure that "auto" is selected for IDE #2 for both master and slave. -
bishop1911, I am also running Windows XP and I had the same problem a few months ago. I tryed uninstalling and reinstalling drivers, it didn't work. I had to use System Restore. To do this go to START -> HELP, and then under "Pick a task" click "Undo changes to your computer with System Restore". A new screen will pop up. Select "Restore my computer to an earlier time" Select the date on the Calendar of which you installed Nero. The list to the right of the calendar will then change. It should show a time, and then say Installed Nero Burning Rom. Highlight that and click next. You should be able to figure the rest out from there.

I used to hear of this problem actually quite a bit when Windows XPlosion hit the market. So, a search or the windows help newsgroups should also give quite a lot of information. But, I think many of the problems have been resolved with some of the patches released by Microsoft. So, go to www.windowsupdate.com and get the patches especially the ones that address issues with burners.

Many CD reading/writing applications aren't able to properly detect drives due to a problem with how Adaptec's ASPI package is installed, leaving out some rather important registry keys and such.
I had the same problem as you until I downloaded this fix. Follow the link and you will be all set.

2. install ASPI 4.71 ( or later ) from adaptec

Use the INSTALL.BAT to install after unzipping to make sure the

The readme file that comes with Adaptec also gives info on "install/Force"
