I have downloaded a file that calls itself a VideoCD file, but it has an .avi extension. I can play it on PowerDVD but if I try to convert it in TMPGEnc, I just get a blank screen. It also has a funny fps of 14.985.
I am new to this, and was just starting to het my head around it all until this!
    Any help would be appreciated.

  2. See what happens if you change the extension to MPG. If it still plays fine, then it could be where ever you got the file it was just on the server as an AVI for some reason or other. If it doesn't play, then you likely are using an AVI file encoded with a very weird codec like MPEG V4 or something like that. Will the file load into VirtualDub? If so, check File | Information... to see what that says about it.

The weird frame rate sounds like a DivX file whose frame rate has been decimated by two. Basically, a 30/29.97 fps frame rate was cut in half resulting in 15/14.985 fps instead. Playback is still at 30/29.97, it's just that you see the same frame twice on each refresh or whatever because half the original data was discarded when the file was created. Most likely the original source was VCD, but this file you have is a highly edited AVI and isn't worth attempting to turn back into VCD.

    Thanks for the reply.

So are you saying that I can't burn this file to a CD to play on my DVD?
