  1. Hi-- do programs really make a difference, I've tried 3 capture programs and still get a lot of dropped frames.. Do you think trying AVIO will make it any better? If so, where can I find it, and also how do I enable DMA (and what does that do)? Thanks

    Yes, programs make a difference.
    Here is AV_IO homepage

I usually get about 30-40 dropped frames/hour. I actually got more dropped frames with AVI_IO than I did with Vdub. I think all of my dropped frames are due to synch issues. I have a 1.2Ghz Athlon with 256DDR Ram and an empty ATA100 60GB HDD and I get dropped frames even when capturing at 352x240. If I had a better soundcard I would probably not get dropped frames.

If you are getting 30-40 dropped frames per hour on a 1.2 GHz Athlon with an empty 60GB drive, you probably have some active background tasks running.

You should look into optimizing your computer system for capture.

I have a 1.4 GHz Athlon with an empty 60GB drive and 512Mb of DDR RAM. I usually get less than 2 drops per hour using the fastest lossless capture mode of the Huffyuv codec. 640x480 on a BT848 TV card (mono sound at 64kbps)
