I have been attempting to make an SVCD by capturing high-datarate MPEG2, editing, and then converting to SVCD-standard MPEG2 (and perhaps soon, extracting files directly from my PVR as mpeg2.) I know that sync can sometimes be tricky with MPEG2, but I've run into a situation I haven't seen anyone mention before.

Even when my captured video is in sync, when I load the MPEG into MyFlix XE to edit it, MyFlix XE plays it out of sync. Severely so. I can edit the the frame I want, save it, and play the edited file in WMP or whatever, and it appears to still be in sync still, so it seems that in MFXE, it's not TRULY out of sync, but just appears to be, but I'm leery of editing when I don't know if I'm perhaps editing out seconds of audio that I need, or editing in seconds of audio that I don't need, if that makes any sense.

IIRC, WombleMPEG would also play an in-sync MPEG2 out of sync during editing. TMPGenc isn't an option because I want frame-accurate editing and I NEVER get an accurate edit using TMPGenc. Same with the editor that comes with my capture proggie, PowerVCR II.

Is there a program that will edit MPEG2 accurately, IN SYNC, without sending me to the poorhouse? Or is there a methodology for editing using non-Mpeg2 editors that's fairly idiot-proof? Someone described to me once a method involving demuxing the mpg2, converting the audio to .wav, frameserving the video as a d2v and loading the audio and video separately into an AVI editing program, but it seems like there has to be a better way that doesn't require QUITE so many hoops to jump through and therefore less places where something can go wrong, if something must indeed go wrong. The aforementioned process just had too many places to troubleshoot.

    Addendum:

One other requirement I have is that the program allow you to save the edited MPEG2 at it's full datarate (about 5-6000), not as an SVCD-compliant MPEG or as a proprietary "project" file. I don't remember if it was Video Factory or Vegas Video or both, but I spent money on an MPEG2 editor at one point only to discover that if I didn't save my changes as a project file that could only be read by that program, it was going to force me to covert to VCD or SVCD compliant MPEG2 BEFORE I'd had a chance to crop out the noise at the top and black bars on the sides in TMPGEnc and run it through the filters for noise reduction, color adjustment, sharpness, etc. The program in question did NOT offer me these options in itself.

I don't want to convert to a lower bitrate until I've had a chance to filter out all the bitrate-sucking "junk" I can, so I can preserve my picture quality as much as I'm able to. Ideally, my process would be this:

    Capture or extract high-bitrate MPEG2

Edit MPEG2 and save at full bitrate

Crop, filter and convert to SVCD compliant settings using TMPGenc

    Thanks!

  3. i have this problem too =)
i captured something in pvcrII in svcd ...

EVERYTHING i have tried doesnt like it when i cut it....the ONLY one that has worked is pvcr itself, but thats dodgy =|

    programs i've tried
    - m2 edit pro 4 <-- surprising, i must have missed a setting?
    - womble mpeg2vcr 3.52
    - tmpeg 2.57 plus
all of these create 'stretched' audio problems (audio is ok initially, but then die)

    PLEASE anyobdy with a solutioN?

as a side note, i tried a different svcd musicvid on m2edit and it didnt even sync properly....wtf!

The problem is that these mpegs were not designed to be edited by anything. Then there is the VCD/SVCD standard with several companies not agreeing what it should be. M2 edit always use to produce a non standard bit rate, they say its not, its just different to everyone else

Ulead MediaStudio Pro 6.0, Premiere 6.0 perhaps ?

Here's my proceedure for cutting large MPG2 files from laserdisks that I have captured at around 9Mbps.

    1) Frameserve the multiplexed MPG2 file into VirtualDub. Note the TIME of where you want the cuts to be (VirtualDub appears to be both TIME and FRAME accurate). However, don't DO anything in this program.

    2) Open TMPG and goto the MPEG TOOL > MERGE/CUT feature. Load your multiplexed MPG2 file in to be edited. Use the TIMES taken from VD in step 1 to set the IN and OUT of your clip. Here's is where it gets scary, because it will LOOK like you are going to be cutting off some of your film. Just remember that TMPG is NOT frame accurate, and close your eyes to what you think may happen.

    3) Choose the output file name (for speed, set the destination directory on another DRIVE, if you have one) then hit "RUN". A 4GB file usually will take 5 minutes or so to cut (unless you have to use the same drive, which will take about twice the time).

    4) Once the cut has been made, view the file using WMP to see if you got what you wanted.

It is important to keep your captured audio and video together while you are trimming, so that they remain in sync. Once the main file is all brought together, you can demux the two and process your audio as you see fit (clean up noise, convert to .AC3, etc).

This can be a tedious proceedure, but it is the best I have found to keep A/V sync.

I just noticed the same thing with MY copy of MyFlix XE a few minutes ago! Only in my case, the audio is still out of sync when I play back the edited file.

I pulled a movie off my ReplayTV 4160, in perfect synch, but after editing the commercials out with MyFlix XE, and burning to DVD with DVD MovieFactory, the audio is now a fraction of a second ahead of the video. Not severe, but annoying nonetheless.

    Arrrrgh!!!!!!

**Update: hmmm, just played back the edited file still sitting on my hard drive and the sync is perfect. Looks like the problem isn't XE after all but somewhere in the burning process. **

Well, so much for PowerDirector. The minute I load ANY mpeg file into its editor, I get "PowerDirector has encountered a problem and needs to close" and the program aborts.
