  1. I am trying to open a file using virtualdub to take advantage of the many filters available. However, when i try to open it, it gives me a message about how microsoft owns the patent on .asf and it's not supported. My issue here is that this isn't an asf file?? It's a .avi file?? This was confirmed since i tried to run a converter, and the file did not show up. I can't seem to find the old virtualdub 1.3 with the asf support, so i'm screwed. Anybody have any reccomendations on how to go around this. PS: Changing the extension does nothing for all you quick fixers.

    2 things:

    1:
If the file came from Kazaa - often times it really is an asf but has been relabled avi or mpg

    2:
It may be encoded with the M$ mpeg4 v3 codec which originally allowed avi encoding then was altered to require asf only.

    try here: http://www.divx-digest.com/software/mpeg4codec.html or here:
