This depends on your OS.
For 98SE/ME go to Device Manager and open up the properties of the disk drive, and check the DMA box on the Settings tab.
For Win2K/XP you will have to open Device Manager and look at the advanced properites for the channel. Found under IDE/ATAPI controllers, primary (or secondary) channel. On the Advanced tab, make sure your devices are set to "DMA if available"cheers!
