I downloaded Vampire Hunter D: Bloodlust as an avi. file, however it's such a large file when I try to encode it, it takes over 18 hours and then crashes my machine. I've tried cutting it in half with Virtual Dub and Avichop but these programs won't recognise that it's an AVi. file, however I can play it on all the players eg, tha playa and windows media.

I'm really confused, can sobody help me out.

    Cheers

  2. First, give us the specifications of your PC. 18 hours to reencode an AVI less than two hours in length seems abnormal. What is your processor, how much system RAM do you have, how big is your hard drive, how much free space do you have on the HD, etc.

Next, give us some details about this AVI file you have. What are it's dimensions in pixels? Is it letterboxed or full screen? What is it's duration in time and/or frames? What is it's frame rate? What codec was used to create the AVI?

Finally, what exactly do you intend to do with the file? Why do you need it to be smaller? Are you trying to make a VCD? Are you trying to make the AVI file smaller on your hard drive? Are you trying to make the AVI file small enough to burn to a CD-R?

I'm trying to convert it to a VCD so I can play it on my dvd player.
I've got a celeron with 512meg Ram, 19gb hard drive with about 10gb left on it.
The file is 30 FPS in letter box format, I don't know what was used to encode it.
When I use Tmpge to encode it, the est time says 2 1/2 hours, runs fine until it gets to about 50% then it just crawls.

    Any ideas?

  4. Celeron? Celeron 300MHz? Celeron 1300MHz?
As Churchill famously predicted when Chamberlain returned from Munich proclaiming peace in his time: "You were given the choice between war and dishonor. You chose dishonor, and you will have war."
