When i convert to SVCD from a functioning avi with TMPGEnc (sound in wav from Virtuadub) and burn it the sound starts fine and in synch but then if goes out of synch. then pauses to bring back the sound in synch with video. This happens a lot of times in five minutes and gets very irritating. In virtuadub>file> file info, it tells me of the skew in audio. video files with no preloaded skew work fine. if anyone can help. please do. thanx.

Ok, I think you saved out the WAV and its uncompressed at 44.1Khz ? However this will only work with an AVI that has no junk frames.
If the AVI has junk frames as well as a improper VBR audio rate, then you have trouble.
TMPGEnc is getting better at handling junk frames, but at times it can still get upset.
You need to scan for junk frames in Vdub, if it finds any, then you may have no choice to save out the whole AVI using full processing mode for video and audio.
Its never the same, so you could try removing the junk frames, then saving the WAV
Also Vdub 1.410 has a known problem with junk frames, so you may need to use "vdub-mp3-freeze.exe" which will also scan for junk frames, but makes a log of any found at c:\badframes.log which you can then use to delete the bad frames (At keyframes) starting with the highest blocks first.
I believe this is the problem, as there are pauses which indicate there might be bad frames at that point. -
I really dought is that, because the avi plays fine, no junk frames in the avi at all. the avi just has a preloaded audio skew. something like 0.01s for every 387 samples. this i believe is the real problem, TMPGEnc is not capable of with dealing with such an audio feature that obviously enhances the viewing of the avi with respect to sound, but at the same time makes any avi file converted to SVCD format play the audio in a funny way on a standalone DVD player. (I think. Correct me if i'm wrong).

i also have this problem from time to time. if your .avi has NO bad frames, then just load the .avi in tmpgenc as is. do not save the audio as wave. after encoding cut with bbmpeg and voila, your movie is ready to burn!

Yeah, unfortunately i already tried that and then i get an SVCD with no sound. All guides on the internet say the solution to this is to convert the avi sound to wav. this brings me back to square one. it feels like this problem is a never ending cycle.

Well the cure to this type of problem, is always saving the audio out uncompressed at 44.1Khz then TMPGENC will cope. If the lip sync is constant throughout the movie you can also use source range and select a + - audio gap correct.
The only other alternative is to save the AVI uncompressed in Vdub ?
With or without uncompressed WAV -
You obviously (king john) think you know it all, u have unfortunately not paid attention enough to what i wrote. firstly converting to 44.1KHz is what i always do in virtuadub, you could not have know this i give you credit for that, but you should also know that TMPGEnc does convert (and cope fine) the audio to 44.1KHz anyway with no noticeble difference to the naked ear. Sencondly the sound is not all behind or all before the video, its actually in synch and then slowly drifts out of sink according to the preloaded skew the avi file has, so you should know this: an audio gap would not help in this situation. which is what i mentioned earlier, my dear king john. I hate to brake it to you, but your first suggestion was probably closer to the solution than your second suggestion. But thank you for trying. it shows you actually aren't selfish and actually want to help me in my quest for the solution for the preloaded audio skew on an avi.
Thanx,

Nope, don't know it all, that's not possible, as each time there is always a new problem, not much use sometimes passing on information that should work but don't.
What I do know is, you have an attitude problem, the sooner you learn to lighten up the better, with an attitude likes yours, you wont get any help from anybody. -
To king john :
i believe the word your looking for, to describe my replies is frustration. frustration, i have over this problem. Besides i'm starting to believe there is no solution and when there is a problem that has no solution then help is useless because there is no solution. Was that too complicated for king john to follow??
To all other forum readers: have you ever hear o a problem involving preloaded audio skew? if so, where? please let me know. thank you
Fred
