Try this:
http://www.vcdhelp.com/dvdplayers.php
Find your player/game in the drop down list and hit search.
Check the columns to the right of the player(s) listed to see
if they play VCD's, SVCD's etc...
Goodluck. -

It can't play standard VCDs only special made mpegs burnt with special folders and stuff.
-
whoa! whered that come from?
well i did a little experiment with that, i took a five mintue clip, encoded it and tried it and it works!!!8) hey i know when ive been proven wrong!
how old is this guide?!?! and why didnt you tell me about this before?
i just never gave it the thought that a non-standard vcd would work! espeically after like 20 standard vcds wased on trying it, and then reading it in PSM that its not possible (pretty much the best playstation2 mag)!
now plase dont tell me theres one for the xbox!! -
This is not a vcd or even a non-standard vcd. It is essentially a home made playstation game, except it only contains a single PSS and the necessary files to play it. The audio must be wav so you lose tons of space on the disk without any real quality gain. Also the limitation of the length of PSS playtimes means your clip will have to be very short.
This method has been around as long as the PS2 itself and the same thing was done with the original psx but with STR files. The very short playtime pretty much makes this method useless for full length movies, at least in my opinion.
Eventually there will probably be a hardware adapter or possibly even a software hack which will allow true vcd playback on the PS2 but as of yet the PS2 still cannot play vcds or svcds. -
Since we are on the subject - Is there any special formatting or folders
or anything I would need to play a VCD on a regular PS?
Thanks. -
To play an actual vcd on the playstation (the original psx NOT the PS2) you need either the hardware vcd adapter or the internal vcd card.
To play disks formatted like the ones discussed above yes you do need similar files and folder structures in order to load the STR file (your movie.) I do not know how to do this but it shouldn't be too hard to find info on the internet. The program you need is called avi2str and the necessary documention should go along with it. There are also other programs which can convert avi to str as well.
If you own a game enhancer than you don't have to do anything other than burn the STR file to your disk and load it through the game enhancer's menu.
With STR files you also have a very limited playtime and the quality is lower than a typical vcd. -
Confirmination is NEEDED! I found an image file that you have to burn at 1x and your PS2 has to have a mod-chip to read the cd-r. If you can do that then you are supose to be able to play Standard VCD's from my understanding and DivX! here is the read me file that comes with it.

Ps2 VCD/DivX Player
Ver. 1.1
Finally you can play your VCDs and AVI's right on your PS2 console !
*Play ANY VCD or AVI using the (C)Divx codec
*Use your controller as a remote (NO PS2 REMOTE NEEDED!)
*Divx 4.12 ported directly to PS2 by Da-Expert.
*Supports both NTSC/PAL (Selector)
-------------
This is simple to burn and use, just load the .cue file into CDRWIN and burn onto a blank CDR.
Then with your modchipped PS2 load it up & boot ! This file is NOT a self booter so if you don't
have a modchip grab a copy of my bootcd.
Burn at 1x speed (no faster !!)

VCD Controller Functions
------------------------
X = Play
O - Stop
R1 = Rewind
L1 = Forward
Start = Pause
R2 = Bring up the Divx Menu
L2 = Bring up the PS2 VCD Main Menu (options)

"me talkin: I was going to post this yesterday but my internet froze and I couldn't reboot cuz I was rippin one of my dvd's took like 9hrs -_- I'm never going to use those settings again and I didn't see any quality" improvements. -
umm.
Not to be a knit picker. But if the ps2 can't play standard/non-standard VCDs. Then isn't the answer to this post no? There just happens to be a way to put formatted movie files on a CD-R/W and watch them on a ps2 as you "WOULD" a VCD on a DVD player.
That's me not trying to knit pick. How pathetic eh?
j00r Canadian eh?Is it supposed to look like that? -
intelligent people are really few and by far aren't they? This cd is supose to add some software code (e.g. codecs, mpeg1/divx'avi') to your PS2 the way boot disc do with PS, thus enabling you to play "standard" VCD's but that is how I understand sense there is lil info about this program. People are able to load up emulators to the PS2 so why not codecs for movies? just like an emulator setup now isn't it?

I have found another program for VCD play on the ps2 and right now everyone that knows about this(which must not be many) is trying to find a way to use it without a mod-chip or swap utilities. Also I have found MP3 playback program that I think is supose to work without no mod-chip you just burn and put it in and it loads up an EGBrowser then I supose you take out the disc and insert the MP3 disc and play. The mp3 browser was made in japan. I'll post the new VCD software I found after someone in this board says they got a Mod-Chip and I'll post the MP3 browser if anyone requests it.

This is crazy but a whole lot of people are reporting that svcd's work in the ps2 can someone verify this? Also this template http://www.sstoker.freeserve.co.uk/pssmcf.zip for TMPGEnc is supose to convert the movies into a readable format for the ps2. Why is it, it seems like I always find tons of crap that no one else knows about?

The Xbox can play VCD, Divx 3, and Divx 4. The only thing is the Xbox has to be modded and you would have to go to http://xbox.bumax.dk/ were they have an app that you install on the Xbox to play the movies. You would more than likely have to use CD-RW's for the Xbox to be able to read the disc. And the app is only at Alpha 4 right now and it is called XBPlayer and the mod chip is like $60-$80 right now so if you have some money go for it, the Xbox will also be able to play SVCD's too but that is later. For updates check out www.xb-power.com

Well. I intend on testing the many ways people have found to play video on PS2 on Thursday/Friday, as I will be modifying my PS2 so I can perform the Paperclip swap...I just have to wait for my Dremel Tool to arrive.
The one PS2 VCD/DivX player is incredibly shady. I am even more skeptical because the guy says:
"Then with your modchipped PS2 load it up & boot ! This file is NOT a self booter so if you don't have a modchip grab a copy of my bootcd."
Which is complete bs. There is no PS2 Bootdisk...and if there was one that worked...we would have heard about it.
I will say that the CD's structure looks legit however, so one can never be sure.
the PSS thing is a real pain in the ass to do; but it will almost definately work. I'll test this aswell
So, DBZNJapan, you can post that "Other VCD software" you have, as I will be able to test it. -
In case anyone was wondering... The Dreammovie VCD Player for Sega Dreamcast works just fine. You don't have to mod the system or anything, just plug in an IR Remote Dongle, run the disc that comes with it, swap in your VCD and it plays. Sometimes you have to go to the MPEGAV directory and select the DAT file manually, though. It works on both North American and Asian Dreamcast consoles. The DCDivX Player works pretty darned well too. So does GypPlay.
