could someone explain to me the advantage(if any) to having registered ddr ram? ecc? is it really worth it?

For a typical home user there is actually a disadvantage. I cannot explain it in any form of technical manner but registered ram basically runs checks on the information it processes. This is only really useful in servers or on pc's that have alot of data coming in and out and that must remain extremely stable. On any other pc environment the additional processing actually makes the memory slightly slower.

Take a look at http://www.corsairmicro.com/main/tsdramfaq.html (Corsair makes good memory). They have brief semi-technical explanations of DDR, ECC, and registered memory.

so now i know that what i need is mid-range, brand name, reccomended ddr ram. i don't need ecc, and i don't need registered.
