  1. What software is there that will allow you to simply go from DVD to VCD? Do you really need four or five pieces of software? Isn't there an all in one solution, especially for newbies?

Also I just purchased a DVD rom drive(Pioneer DVD-106s bulk) I have no software. What do I need to view movies and other video files?

  2. Look in the Tools section of this site for a program called DVDx. It's claim to fame is it's one click, all in one functionality. If you just want to get it done, that should do it for you.

Many DVD releases in the US come with something called PC Friendly on disc. If you place a DVD in your PC, it will prompt you to install PC Friendly automatically if the program is on the disc. All it does is install rudimentary drivers and a front end to Windows Media Player that allow you to play DVDs on your PC.

You can also look in the Tools section of this site for free DVD player software. I suggest the MaXimus DVD Player, for this. Just make sure you also download the Free Codec Installer that is at its official website.
