I can normally burn at 8x speed, with no problems, but just recently I can't seem to burn above 4x without getting a BURN error (£10 worth of coasters). I haven't installed anything new, so what could be the problem?

Off the top of my head, you might have added software that keeps running without your loading anything. A good example might be a virus checker or anything in the Windows tray. If you're running Windows 95 or 98, hit CTRL-ALT-DELETE and see what the "Close Program" box has to say. You might terminate anything you don't absolutely need and then try burning.
Otherwise, you might start saving up for one of the drives with buffer-overrun protection, like "BurnProof" or "ExacLink" or something similar. I haven't created a "coaster" since I switched out my original burner for one with ExacLink.Animation and geeky reviews and podcasts at
