  1. Hi !

I wanted to put a 50 minute clip on one SVCD.
Cropping top and bottom of the picture as well
as encoding with TMPGEnc's CQ at 50% got my
mpg-file down to about 450 mb.

I'm able to play but I am NOT able to FF/Rew.
these 50mins SVCDs!!! I cut the mpeg2 files in
2 parts with TMPGEnc (30mins and 20mins) and burned the
30 mins clip which played PERFECTLY (able to FF/Rew.).
So obviously I did encode correctly!
(If I put both cut clips on one SVCD everything is
screwed up and the DVD player is not able to play
    the SVCD...)

I joined the 2 parts (with TMPGEnc) and again I could
NOT FF/Rew (just play and watch). This has NOTHING to
do with the Nero Scandata bug for I tried it with
WinOnCD 3.8 PE with the same results!!!

    ANY SUGGESTIONS OR SOLUTIONS (!!!)
    ARE HIGHLY APPRECIATED!!!
BTW I'm using Philips DVD751 (latest firmware)

    Thanks in advance
    Med.

  2. First, I wouldn't encode with CQ (I assume CQ_VBR) but with either CBR or 2pass VBR. Take a look at the bit rate calculators under the 'Tools' link on the left. Enter your video lenght, audio quaility, and number of CDRs to determine the needed bitrate to fit your movie on a 74/80min CDR.

Ok, to answer your question. A lot of stand alones have problems playing MPEG2 files encoded by TMPGenc (I have no idea why). D/load bbMPEG, load your MPEG2 file in it, de-mux it (ie. create MPV and MPA files), then re-mux it back to one MPEG2 file. There's directions under the 'Edit' link to the left.

You might also want to d/load TSVC (www.ttool.org) which will allow you to add chapters to your MPEG2 file.

  3. @ Vejita-sama:
Thanks for your reply but actually TMPGEnc is NOT my
problem for I am able to play short encoded TMPGEnc
clips and I could split the long TMPGEnc encoded file
with TMPGEnc and the short ones play.
Nevertheless I remuxed with bbMPEG which DIDN'T work
    either!!!

    @ all:
Any useful hints are VERY apreciated!

  5. Hi Medical,

Sorry I don't have a solution but I do have the exact same problem. I have a Philips DVD712 and have also noticed that short SVCD's work fine but SVCD's longer than about 40 minutes won't ff/rw.

I tried several different encoders, tried VBR and also CBR but to no avail. BBmpeg, i-author, vcdimager can't seem to fix it. I'm starting to believe it is a Philips/firmware related problem. My DVD-player comes with firmware 2.9.6 (mp3 support).

If I find a solution I'll let you know. Let me know if you come up with a solution please (on the board or using the private messages feature).

  6. I too have this problem on my Philips DVD-711 standalone player. I have tried every encoder, every option, and every burning program known to man. Regardless of what I do, I still can't FF/RW if the disc content is longer than 35 minutes or so. In one of the .pdf files on Philips' site, I believe that I saw a note saying that you can expect to put about 35 minutes of video on one SVCD. Perhaps they programmed something into their firmware that won't allow it scan past 35 minutes. If so, that would explain it. In any case, I have seen large numbers of people complain about this same problem on this board in the past. I have the latest firmware in my player, but the problem persists.

  7. Have you tried burning an image instead of the actually MPEG2 file? I don't know why but this fixed my ff/rew problems (burning with nero 5.5.x.x)

  8. @ digvid & duck712 !
Thanks so much for your replys although they
    are not very promising.
As far as the standard is concerned you can put 36
minutes of SVCD encoded movie on one CD but I
suppose it has something to do with the Philips
Players that you can't put longer clips on one CD
because otherwise much more people would complain
    about this problem...

    @ vejita-sama
I created images with VCDImager with NO success!
And obvious I'm not the only one who tried every
    setting possible without success.

Any hints, p-codes etc. to make
    longer-clips-SVCDs work would be GREAT!!!

Ummm when burning a MPEG 2 file with Nero u need to include a file called scandata....its a bug in Nero......basicly from memory u creat a file with notpad called scandata and just type in caps in the wordpad file SCANDATA then put this file in the "ext" folder before u burn. This fixed the ff and rew problem......for me anyway

try doing a search for scandata in this forum and it will pull the relevant articles...not sure if my memory has served correctly.

    Hope this helps

nsdn: thanks for the suggestion but as Medicall already wrote in his original post:
