When I'm converting avis to mpegs, TMPGEnc gives me a message not to make the mpeg larger than 4 GB because some authoring software won't be able to read it. That would waste some space on a 4.7 GB DVD. I'm using Ulead DVD Movie Factory to make my DVDs. Is there any reason I should stay below 4 GB?

Only reason I can think of is if you are using FAT32 filing system. If using NTFS on win2k/XP you should be able to create any size file you want. I do and have no problems with files over 4GB!

Hi,
I'm just getting started in DVD myself; but I think your're correct. Some softare won't support large AVIs and MPEGs. 2GB is the most common limit I've seen. The previous post about Win9x-ME and FAT32 is also correct; it has a 4GB filesize limit (2GB is you want to use Ms tools such as Windows Explorer to move files from one HD to another.)
Also, I understand from my reading from many sources that many DVD players won't read large VOBs (MPEGs authored onto DVDs). The most common size here seems to be 1GB. However, I have burned a DVD+RW with a 1.2GB file and it played in my Pioneer 343 OK.
Please post your results so we can all learn more,
Allan
