Before puting labels on a few of my burned DVD-R's they worked fine. But then more than half of them stopped reading in my DVD player after putting sticker labels on the top of the disc. Does anyone know if this would be possible for the DVD not playing? Has anyone else had this problem? Thanks!

Many people report this problem. However, others say that their labels don't affect play. The problem is that the label needs to be put on the disk perfectly (ie, properly centered), or the resulting "out-of-balance" condition will make reading the disk nearly impossible. I suggest that you use one of those "stomping" tools to aid in your "disk afixtion". Trying to do this "by eye" is almost humanly impossible.
A question: How did you apply your label? -
Just an FYI: I do label my backups, I've tried clear, matte and glossy labels and have not as of yet encountered a problem.

I have posted here about this issue also. Wondering...could it be partly due to some players not being able to handle slightly "unbalanced" discs? 'Cause , yes, there have been comments that some people see no problem at all when their DVD-+Rs are labeled.

I burned about 40 of these discs and they all worked before being labeled. Some of them are suddenly not being read by my DVD player at all though. The only thing that I've done to them is put labels on them. And I used a stomper like tool to put the lables on perfectly. The only thing I could think of is, could it be a reflectability issue on the dics surface. Could the label actualy change that in some way? Thanks for all your help.

The act of labeling is definitely doing it, but the why's are not clear. My experience has also been that even though labeling the DVD-+R renders it unplayable, I can still read the data if I want to copy the VIDEO_TS files back to my harddrive with no problem, which has saved me a few tears. Maybe reflectivity is an issue, but should it be more so when watching the videos? Even my DVD200i has problems playing them, but can stll copy the data.

Just out of curiosity, have you tried applying the label first and then burn the disk?

instead of using full disc labels
why not use center labels only?
they only fit the part which the dvd/cd player grab the disc from to spin it
it's much less of a hassle to place on a disc and you can place it by eye
i've done this with my cd/vcd discs and they continue to play in my dvd player and cd player
