  2. From what I've seen elsewhere in these forums, the maximum frames per GOP to be DVD compliant is 15 NTSC, 18 PAL. If you have more frames than these, you will probably have to re-encode.

Per the guide here, it seems to be 15 NTSC and 18 PAL.

Those people who believe in self-written guides from other users are lost. At the very maximum you can get the knowledge of the guy who wrote the guide.
But this knowledge can be around 0 or around 100, who knows. (Everyone can write a guide )

The mentioned guide is wrong (as many many others).

This is the link that contains the full and only truth (for dvd specs!!):
    http://www.mpeg.org/MPEG/DVD/Book_B/Video.html

mb1 is correct. It's 18 for NTSC and 15 for PAL.

hmm, quite heavy stuff. Do you think the guide is completely wrong? Do you mind to point me to some of the wrong guides? Maybe we can correct it.

Do you think the guide is completely wrong?
No of course not. But I didn't read the guide completely.
I think it is enough if a guide is wrong with important details, think of setting a pal gop of 18. result is that creating a dvd is impossible.

    Another example:
    http://www.vcdhelp.com/svcd.htm
    Technical info on svcd bitrate
    Video:
max 2524 kbit/sec MPEG-2 (if the audio is in 224 kbit/s), audio + video bitrate max bitrate is 2748 kbit/s.
That is nonsense (wonder where it comes from).
svcd video bitrate allows max. 2.600 kbps.
But additionally svcd max. bitrate is 2.788,8 kbps (2x75x2.324x8 = 2x speed). This includes everything (video + all audio + subtitles + muxing overhead).
The muxing overhead depends on bitrate and muxer (and muxing options). I recommend fitcd for exact calculation.

Mux 2.524 kbps video + 224 kbps audio and you are over 2.788,8 kbps which means then definitely XSVCD.
As a practical rule don't go over 2.718 kbps (that is estimation) for video + audio and you are on the safe side.

That are two major mistakes in 2 really easy questions: allowed gops on dvd and allowed bitrate on standard svcd.

As I said before I did not read all the guides on this site but I certainly read some the next days and pm you found mistakes (maybe improvements too).

Note that I did not say the guides are bad (I like linking newbies to them ) but they are not always correct.
That is why always the same questions appear (what bitrate for svcd and so on) and why they are often answered wrong. And that's the real pity.

    And look at that thread
    http://forum.vcdhelp.com/viewtopic.php?t=101135

wrong knowledge multiplies lightning fast - and people often do not know what they are doing wrong (cause the guides tell them to do so).

Yes, I agree. Obviously some of the guides must be re-read. Unfortunately we do not have as many experts on the board as the doom9 forum or the dvd-svcd-forum have, but we are working on it and do our's best. I really appreciate your help.
