Hi
I have a ripped DVD which is 3 hrs long. Processing with TMPGENC gives a 14 hr timescale. Can I process it in 2 chunks over a few days or does it have to be done in one go?
Also, if I do the first, How can I join the two sections please?
I accept I will need to split it to fit on to 2 or 3 cds.

Sure. Just load the souce video/audio in TMPGenc, set the template/settings as desired. Then click on 'settings' look under advance. Double click on 'source range' and enter the start and stop frames you want to encode.
There's a clock at the top right that shows you the timepoint in the movie and a preview screen.
To make life easier I would then save the project, and encode it. When you want to do the next 'clip' load the progject, go back to source range and click 'jump to last frame' then click 'set start frame' and contine.
Note - the if you just drag/drop all the MPEG files in nero you'll get a slight pause between tracks. So you'll either have to a) join the MPEGs together or b) since the movie is 3hrs just encode for each disc (ie. 735MB or 795MB). To join look under 'Edit' link on the left
If you're using the default VCD template 1min=10MB, if you're making a x(S)VCD use a bitrate calculator (look under tools on the left) to determine the needed bitrate. Also remember that the bit rate calculators only work with CBR or 2pass VBR.

Vejita thanks a lot for a prompt reply. I will appreciate a bit more on the last paragraph please! I am cutting a SVCD to retain the quality on this DVD.
thanks a lot -
Ok two things. First if this is a DVD -> SVCD converison go to http://www.doom9.org and d/load DVD2SVCD. It's a frontend program/loader that will run:
vStrip, DVD2AVI, tooLame, CCE, bbMPEG, VCDImager
Second, click on 'Tools' on the right, and look under bitrate calculators. There's a simple java based there. You enter the lenght of your movie, the number of 74/80min CDRs you wan to use, the audio quaility and it gives you the bitrate to full each disc.
In order for these calculators to work you need to encode with either CBR (constant bitrate) or 2pass VBR (variable bitrate).
IIRC the deafult for SVCD in TMPGeng is CQ_VBR (constant quaility - variable bitrate). Change this is either CBR or 2pass VBR. 2pass VBR makes a much better picture, but takes twice as long to encode (ie. 2passes). Also make sure you set 'motion search' to high.
FOr CBR just enter the bitrate from the calculator, for 2pass VBR enter the number as the ave bitrate. For max enter 2500 and for min enter 0~900 (or whatever you like).
DVD2SVCD encodes with CCE which is much faster than TMPGenc. I have a Tbird 1.2Ghz and CCE is ~2.25x faster. I really would give it a try it's much easier.
What I do is set 'do not make images' then use TSVC (www.ttool.org) to add chapters to the MPEG2 file, then create an image and burn with nero. The chapters in TSVC are seamless (ie. if you play through them no pause, and if you hit next with your remote video skips ahead). Also I can't ff/rew my SVCDs if I use TMPGenc, but I can with bbMPEG.
This is getting kind of long, so I sent you a private message with some more info. Luck
