  1. What exactly are the differences in these 2 formats? Is the quality so much better in SVCD? If you have a crappy file to begin with, will you gain some quality converting it into SVCD? I see there is a lot of screeners out, that is encoded in SVCD,and i am not sure i can see the difference in SVCD screeners contra VCD screeners.

  2. Dude, there are three links at the upper right of this page (on the blue background):
    - VCD
    - SVCD
    - DVDR

The first two completely answer your question.

    ---------------------

I, personally, don't think SVCD is all that much better. And NO AMMOUNT OF FIDDLING will make a huge difference on the quality if you don't have good quality to begin with. Each time you compress the video, you remove information that cannot be restored. Stuff like interlacing and all that will net you only tiny returns in quality boost, and all you're doing there is tweaking it to play better with your specific hardware.

So, the honest answer is, if you start with crap, you will ALWAYS have crap.

  3. From a high quality source (e.g., DVD), SVCD can look much better than VCD.

  4. Michael is right -- source is everything. I don't rip from DVD to VCD, so I haven't really seen the quality boost in SVCD. I'm making some animations however (Poser and Strata 3D work), and will increase the resolution to see if the SVCD quality is worth it.

  5. svcd- 480x480 mpeg2
    vcd- 380x240 mpeg1
svcd has the higher rez, its also in dvd format (mpeg2), so it looks better.
you wont get a better picture if you convert from one to the other.
i hope this was helpful. ;o)

Probably just a typo but vcd resolution is actually 352x240 but thats just for ntsc. The pal equivalent is 352x288, and for svcd the pal equivalent is 480x576.

Svcd supports higher resolutions as well as higher bitrates than vcd. It also supports more efficient bitrate allocation in the form of variable bitrate. If you use a high enough bitrate than svcd will be significantly superior to vcd in quality.
