  1. Just had a question for those of you who already own the Pioneer DVR-A04...

Can you overburn regular CD-R media? Also, have you had any compatibility issues with the cheapest DVD-R/DVD-RW media you've been able to find? I've also read a lot about some incompatibility issues putting SVCD onto DVD-R but if my Pioneer player already reads SVCDs then can I not just in theory put 2 full-length SVCDs onto 1 DVD-R, splitting them like 1 track/chapter?

    thanks for all the input...

  2. DVRA04 supports overburn, CD-Text, and it is generally a very advanced CD writer. SVCD's are not standard by any counts. The audio is not 48K, and the resolution is whacked too. You can struggle to get it to work but there is no guarantee that it will work with your new player someday. In fact, it probably won't. SVCD will disappear as soon as DVD-R becomes mainstream.

digitizer is right. while vcd will live on because it is easy to create and compatible with most players svcd will become obsolete. why bother encoding to a disc which won't play in most dvd players when you can make dvd-r?

I've found that only the higher priced, Grade A+ media has total compatablility in DVD players...

Right now, the best deal is the Apple DVD-R General media which is $25 for a 5 pack, even though it's really just the Pioneer media, finding the Pioneer media at $5 a pop is almost impossible..

As for the cheaper media,(TDK,MAXELL etc do not apply here) brands like CQ or Fastburn etc... are usually grade B media and for one- don't like to burn at 2x speeds which REALLY SUCK, and two, they play only in a few "do it all players" like Apex etc...

I've found a brand at the local computer show that at $1.45, gives 2x speed and does play in some DVD players her and there but its really best for backing up data...

At that price, it's cheaper then a bunch of 700 meg CD-r's and takes up only 1 disc space in my holder..

As for video, I only use the Apple or Pioneer because I know it'll play in just about anything.
