I've got one of these cheap capture cards (MXTV 9578 based on the Bt878 chipset) and have been getting really good results when capturing at 352x288. When i try to set a higher vertical resolution however, I get an error that the format is not supported. I can watch in higher resolutions though, it's just not allowed for recording. Also I can change the horizontal resolution up to 720 without any problems what so ever.
Is this a driver problem or simply a hardware problem? Or am i simply taking a wrong turn somewhere?

It could be hardware or software
Try capturing using either VirtualDub or AVI_IO as they both support high res capture in the BT878 chipset.
If you still can't get it to work then you may like to try running the third party drivers linked below instead of the manufacturers drivers.

Thanks
Turns out it must be software related since the drivers i got from the link you gave me allowed me to capture at higjer framesize. The only problem is that my card isn't really directly supported so i'm trying out a lot of different types of cardsconfigs to wich one gives me good picture (the custum one gives me Black and white only but i'm certain this should be fixeble)
