I am new to the whole scene of capturing. I have AverTV Stereo Card. I took back my WinTv because of the S-Video capability of the AverTv card. I have PowerVCR and VirtualDub(with all codecs). I have played with and enjoy the new CVD format very much. I have setting on the powerVCR to record in true mpeg-2 cvd format and mpeg-1 just to try the quality and have had incredible success believe it or not. I am just curious as to why would I reocrd in VirtualDub over PowerVCR? Is the quality the much more noticable? I figure it is, but I have some CVD's I have made with PowerVCR that are tought to beat in my opinion. I have digital cable running through my s-video slot, regular cable through the coaxial or tuner and vcr through composite. I have the tweaked WDM drivers, I was easily able to get the factory drivers installed with Aver and the updates, but the resolutions and abilites were not close to the tweaked drivers. In virtualdub I drop frames pretty easily, and it bugs the hell out of me. Is it easier to drop frames in S-video/coaxial/composite with virtualdub. Right now I think my PowerVCR tweak with CVD is tough to beat. Any suggestions to help me out. I have XP 1.2 ghz processor and 256 MB of Ram with a 40 gig hardrive. If i upgraded more Ram will it help me out? Great forum guys and gals. It has helped me out more than you can imagine.

Any ideas, I have a feeling many people have questions like this one. I checked all posts and never have really seen a comparison.

PowerVCR has only a good quality mpeg real-time software encoder. Capturing in Vdub and using tmpgenc you can get excellent mpeg encoding. The difference is noticable on VCD and SVCD captures, but at high bit rates, like 4 Mb/sec, the real-time software encoder does a nice job. However, if you're looking for the best real-time software encoder, the WinVCR (Cineplayer VCR) has a better encoder and will give better results on VCD and SVCD captures. Also, Ulead's Videostudio 6 has a nice real-time software encoder.

I am by no means an expert in this area, but here is my experience with Power VCR.
Power VCR is excellent at capturing and outputting straight as Mpeg. But the format is not compatible with that required to write to a vcd disc. The audio will require converting to 44.1khz. To do this you need to use an external program like vitualdub or TMP. Also due to frame dropping the audio is usually out of sync using power VCR. -

Interesting, I thought the same thing. I can get better quality mpeg-1 off power_vcr, than I can off anything. I also purchased power_director, I like the fact its the only program you can record avi, mpeg 1 & 2 in, but is it me or does the AVI quality suck ass. Tell me wha you think
