HI,
I am new to this site, but I came here because it seems like the best place to get help. My friend bought me a dvd that says its an all region dvd, but it doesn't play in my dvd player at home. He told me that the dvd is PAL formated thats why it won't play. Is there a way to get it to play? My dvd player at home is a Panasonic DVD RV-30. I don't have a DVD-Rom so I can't try that. I did try it in my PS2 and it doesn't work on that either.
Any help would be much appreciated.
Thanks,
-Jovo

I think you have to have a TV that can show in PAL system. Just having a PAL-capable player is not enough. If it does not play, there is not much you can do. The only solution has been mentioned already - ripping the DVD and encoding it into a SVCD. But if you have a DVD-drive, then you can just watch it on the computer screen.

Sorry for my ignorance..
If i can play R1 or ntsc dvds on my multiregion dvd player on a cheap and nasty TV I can't see why you should not be able to play pal or r2 dvd on yours...are you sure your dvd is multireigon? -
I posted this answer to a similiar earlier question, it may help clear a few things up.
The ability to play both NTSC and PAL format DVD and (S)VCD is quite common. The question as to wether it is of use to any particular individual depends on the players exact capabilities and the TV in use. Many players will output the signal type (NTSC or PAL) appropriate to the type of disc being played. Therfore if you play a PAL disc but only have an NTSC TV (or vice versa) it will not display correctly or at all.
Some players have a setting that allows the player to output NTSC as PAL (or vice versa). For example. my Panasonic will output NTSC disc in PAL-60. This is a PAL signal but with 60 fields (30 frames) per second. Most PAL TV's would be able to handle this. Not all players will do this kind of conversion tho.
Most TV's sold in Europe in the last several years are multi-standard. That is they will quite happily handle NTSC and PAL signals automatically. I believe that in the US the situation is quite different and most TV's are NTSC only.
So if you are in the US (or other NTSC regions) or have older european equipment you may need to convert the format in order to watch some movies.
Hope this helps -
Thanks for all the replies.
I don't think its my tv though because when i put the disc into the dvd player it says "no disc" on the front of the player and the tv screen says "can't play this type of disc, please insert another disc". I'm assuming that its the dvd player. The dvd says ALL regions on the dvd so I don't think it's a region thing. I'm not too sure though. Hopefully one of you will know.

For an US user: Buy an APEX AD3201 DVD player, JandR.com has them for 130.00, view the hack at this website. Using the remote only you can turn off region coding, so It'll play any disc, and Macrovision, so you could record to VHS, and the player automatically converts to PAL or NTSC as needed.
other DVD players can do this, but I know about this one 1st hand.
