  1. I have a bunch of movies on VHS that aren't available on DVD. I'd like to put them over to VCD. I have all the necessary equipment, but am not sure how to begin. I'm using an ATI Radeon VIVO card. The video capture program seems to only give me the option to save any video I capture as MP2 (which I've read is actually an audio format). On their website it says I can save in any standard video format, but I have yet to find out how.

Does anyone else with an ATI Radeon card know how I can set their capture program to save my videos as AVI files or MPEG2 files (which are NOT the same as MP2)? Also which format is necessary to make a VCD?

  2. Will these instructions work with my Radeon? I don't have an All In Wonder card, just a regular Radeon.

  3. Yes AIW guide is usefull for MMC 7.1-7.5,but make sure to download the latest drivers/software from http://www.ati.com/support/driver.html

  4. I did some experimenting with the video capture program and it will now allow me to save the movies as MPG which is MPEG 1. That's the correct format for a regular VCD. So now all I need is 3 blank CDRs and I can try burning.

If I use Nero, is it as easy as dragging the MPG file onto the CDR to create a VCD?

it's as easy as that, but you have to use "vcd" mode, don't burn the .mpeg file(s) as data like you're making a backup on the cd

  6. Right, that means I'd pick VCD from the kind of CD to create and then I can drag the MPEG directly onto it. Then that would create a watchable VCD. Also I'm assuming it must be disc-at-once closed-session.

I have an old AIW 128 ATI card and some childrens family VHS tapes which I also want to put on VCD, so now I have an idea how to do it...

Would the quality be poor and is there a way of improving it, I guess there must be some capture settings

This is all new to me, but something I'd like to get into

hawk77,I'd hoped you also aware there're also compatibilities issues on what stand alone player you're going to play and the brand of cd-R you're going to use
Also, don't burn more than 4X speed for a start and increase your burn speed if everything is OK

    Good luck man

  11. My DVD player can play VCDs and CDRWs too. What brand of CDR should I get? Does Nero let me set my burn speed?

Hawk77: I used a different setup, but did the same thing you're trying with a vhs tape for the first time last weekend. I was a little disappointed with the quality- it's easily watchable, but also noticeably less than the original tape; maybe from a 9 on the tape to an 8 or 8.5 on vcd. My plan is to capture the tape again in MPEG2 and burn the data file on cd so that I'll have it for when the day comes that I can make a dvd with it at hopefully comparable quality. I'd be curious to hear what kind of quality vcd you make. Please update this message or email me directly at collumorgan@yahoo.com after you see the results.

Mike416: You seem to be familiar with Nero. Last night I tried making a vcd from music video mpegs I downloaded from Morpheus, so I don't know much about the source. When I loaded up 12 of them, the vcd wouldn't play, so I tried it with one and it worked fine. Any idea what the problem could be? Is multiple mpegs something that Nero does? Could I have a buffer problem? Wrong setting? Any thoughts would be appreciated.

  13. I'll be happy to tell you all about it. It's gonna be a while though cause I don't even have any CDRs yet. I may decide to skip the whole thing and just get a DVD burner. I need to check the prices on those things though.

  14. I have the AIW Radeon 32DDR and Capture using the TV composite IN

    1. Choose VCD Format

    2. Capture Video (I recommend approx 10 min. at a time, in case you want to edit, I use Video Factory).

3.Import in to Ulead DVD Factory as a new VCD and edit your menus, background and intro music.

    4. Burn to CD using DVD Factory's built in capabilities and POOF you have a VCD v2.0 compliant VCD.

    5. I have made close to ten so far, works better than VHS if the Video signal comes from DirectTV Box or Someother High Quality Source.

  15. I don't have the Ulead video thing. What I'm going to do is use the ATI video in program to capture the VHS to an MPEG. Then I'll use Nero 5.5 to burn that onto a blank CDR and create my VCD.

I don't see why it wouldn't play, maybe your panasonic player won't accept more than a certain chapters ?
You can always merge all the files into one big file so it won't have any chapters. Use TMPEG (it's free) to do this
Then again if you have chapters in your vcd, when you play it in a standalone player, you'll get about 4 seconds pause between each chapter change

    Lymond,

    I recently completed my first couple of transfers from VHS to vcd and like you, the quality is somewhat less than the original vhs; not too bad, but slightly more fuzzy and not as sharp; I use the ATI to capture, Studio Deluxe to edit and Nero to burn; thinking of trying some different proggy's that might help increase the quality; but overall, not too bad for my first 2; seems that Nero really takes a long time to reencode the data though; would prefer something that would be faster; I only have about 58 more tapes to go and I will have my old home video library complete on vcd's; may even go for some onto svcd's;

Why not capture using stinkys' tool(in "Tools") that way you dont have to convert;also use TMPGEnc(also in "Tools") to convert your video,Nero does a poor job.
