  1. Bought a Sony micro mv camcorder. When I download to hard drive via firewire, files are saved as .mmv which are played with Quicktime. I would like to be able to convert to mpg so that I can burn SVCDs, etc.
I've tried programs that convert .mov files with no joy.
    Help appreciated.

p.s. First post here, nice forum :0)

You need Quicktime 5 (6) Pro. Open the file and under File select export. You can then export to avi with whatever codec it allows you to choose.

  3. I installed Quicktime Pro 5.0.2
It will not open the mmv file, says it's an unrecognised format.
Downloaded Public Preview of Quicktime 6, same error message!
    Any other suggestions?

    I would think your instruction manual has all the answers, included MMV file formats and what is needed. I did a quick search and found this;

Since Micro MV is incompatible with gear that understands DV, you might be wondering whether there's any way to get it usefully onto a PC. Yes, there is. Sony include software that understands the new format.

You get the much-bundled MGI PhotoSuite and VideoWave SE with the camera, but they're no use for Micro MV editing. For that, you get...
You can grab video files quickly from MovieShaker, by going to its temp directory and copying the .MMV files that represent each clip to somewhere else. But those files only seem to be playable by QuickTime. Windows Media Player is apparently meant to understand MMV files, but it doesn't seem to understand these ones.
These files contain MPEG TS (MPEG Transport Stream) format video, which can no doubt be stripped out by some utility somewhere. Apparently Sony don't want you to do that, though

I don't know if you are being sarcastic or not. I have read the entire manual. You have provided no answer in your reply and the quotes you provide are not mine or from the Sony manual and are of no help whatsoever, so when you presume that the manual covers my question, I make you wrong!
Sony provide their own app called Movieshaker. This allows you to capture via the Firewire card. It outputs the captured MPEG2 streams as MMV files. They also provide Quicktime 5 (not pro version) to enable you to play the .mmv files. Sony obviously don't realise that Windows users buy their camcorders as well as Mac users lol.
FingernailX has made a suggestion that may work but I haven't been able to get that method to work for me, however, somebody on another forum suggested I try using an app called Xmuxer. This worked perfectly, giving me an mpeg2 (12MB/s). This I can run through Tsunami/Nero, producing outstanding VCDs.

Hi, no I was not being sarcastic at all, the site I downloaded that information from did say that Sony did not wanted you do mess with the format, dam lost the site now, I assumed your manual would have instructions, but now I can see they don't want you to convert it.

As for the QuickTime, if it plays it you would assume it would also convert it. I see you have the player only then.

If you think QuickTime Pro might do it, I might be able to help. I searched for your file types to get that information, and I also found Xmuxer, but did not think much of it, I would have also tried to load the files into TMPGEnc as they are.

But all irrelevant now if you have it working

  7. KingJohn,
I obviously misunderstood the tone of your post!
I did try QT Pro (see my second post).
I also tried the mmv in TMPGEnc (first thing I tried).
Xmuxer may not be too pretty but it does the job, which is all I want.
    Be lucky
