  1. Hi there ,
I'm trying to pass all my VHS stuff onto VCD or SVCD but I'm encountering a lot of problems :

if I capture at 352x288 and then pass it to a VCD standard (1150 KBps) format the result is really bad (not equiparable with the original VHS) .

    So I thought I could do a SVCD , I captured at 640x480 and resized with tmpeg at 480x576 (2524 KBps) .

Even now I've always a bad result (also the image is freezing every 10 seconds) .

    I have a Philips DVD711 player .

    Can somebody help me ?

    Thanks
    Alessandro

VHS resolution (~352x576) is much better than VCD resolution. In order to keep the quality of the original tape, you have to capture at least 352x576 (Virtual Dub->Set custom resolution, also some other capturing applications support this resolution.) Of course you can capture @ even higher resolution, but this doesn't give too much extra advantage as you should be able to capture all details when using 352x576.

Your jumpy SVCD is probably your players fault. I also have an Philips DVD player (DVD 622) and experienced a lot of playback problems before I upgraded my players firmware. You will find more information about Philips firmware updates @ DVD player list, look for the info I have given on DVD 622 FW upgrading.

Philips DVD players support 352x576 XSVCDs pretty well, I haven't had problems after the upgrade. You shouldn't try to fit too much on a Cd, something like 60 minutes on a 80 min CD should give good quality @ 352x576. To get good results easily I recommend you to use DVD2SVCD with CCE 2.50.
