I have read the posts about subtitles and the guides and I don't see a direct question or answer to my problem. I have an Apex 3201 and I want to be able to play my SVCD's with subtitles. The movie is Spygame and was backed up using dvd2svcd. I can see the subs in the default folder and there is a subbed bbmpeg in the default folder also. However when I play it back on the Apex no subtitles appear. I have subtitles on in setup and when I press the subtitle button on the remote I get a circle with a diagonal line. The cue file was built with vcdxbuild which was chosen by default by dvd2svcd. SCVD subtitles were chosen by default. What else can I do? Do I need to use CVD and I-Author? What? I want to be able to have subtitles on most other players also.

Do you mean Svcd subtitles were selected? Most if not all Apex players will not play svcd style subs. You need to use CVD style subs. Hopefully that will solve your problem.

Adam, thank you that is exactly what I needed to know.
Now, what if I wanted to play the same disc on other players. What is the subtitle format that would work in most other DVD players?

Well I'm not sure there has been much testing done on this but it seems to me that CVD style subs are much more widely supported on standalone dvd players.

I just did Mummy Returns with subs in CVD, but they are not showing up on the Apex 3201. What other changes do I need to make. If I have equip between the Apex and the TV copuld that cuse a problem?

Not sure what to tell you. If you used Submux and Winsubmux correctly than I can't think of anything else that could be causing a problem. I don't see how your dvd player's connection to your tv could have any effect on subs. If your getting any picture at all then the subs should work.

Are you sure you're ripping the subs correctly? If you haven't already look at the subrip guide at www.doom9.net.
