To create selectable subtitles you can use I-Author, Philips Svcd Creator, Submux or Winsubmux. Look in the tools section for some of these progs. Use Subrip to extract the subs from your vobs. If you are using I-Author then obviously rip in I-Author format. For any other program rip in Svcd creator format. For guides on how to use subrip look at www.doom9.net.

Once you get them Winsubmux and Submux with the gui's are pretty self explanatory. You can burn the resulting mpg in any svcd burning software.

How do you know, if you can't make subbed SVCDs? Do you have subbed SVCDs that are working with your player or do you just rely on the DVD player compatibility list?

I, for example, have an Philips DVD 622, that is reported to support subtitles. The problem is, that the player skips alot of the subtitles and also has playback problems with subbed SVCDs. I think the situation is the same with all Philips players.

You can burn the resulting mpg in any svcd burning software.
Many have reported problems with subbed SVCDs burned with Nero, VCDImager (VCDEasy) seems to be the most safe option.

  4. Yes, according to the DVD compatibility list, my player does support the selectable subtitles (Apex Ad-1100w). I've also heard on other forums from other sites (forums that are about my DVD player) that my player does infact support the subtitles. I always use VCDEasy for my S/VCDs, so hopefully it'll work.
    Thanks for the help!

  5. soooo ... i went trough the same problem

i suggest, you want to rip the subs from a dvd, right?

this is done best with subrip ... for instructions simply read the guide ...

important: you HAVE TO save the subs in phillips format ... with preview option in subrip it´s easy to get the colors right.

now: you saved the .bmp´s and the phillips format subs ... open the *.sub file in your editor and delete anything (including the[list] tag) but not the list with the bmp´s and colums after.

now you´ve got the right format for winsubmux

how to add the subs with winsubmux to your stream? ... just look at the guides again.

    hope, this helped you out.

The absolutely easiest way to create subbed SVCDs is using DVD2SVCD. Some players require turning PBC off to access the subs.
