  1. While looking over the macrovision and region code posts I came across a reference to an rf modulator for $30 from Radio Shack. The post claims that it removes macrovision. Does this mean that I can simply hook up a box that defeats it, or is there some catch?

An RF modulator cannot remove macrovision. It simply converts the video and audio output of the DVD player to RF (75 ohm connector) for TV's without video\audio inputs. Macrovision is encoded in the interval bar between video frames and no RF modulator can remove that.

  3. I agree, I have an RF modulator and it doesn't remove Macrovision. For VCR, you need a Time Base Corrector (Sima Copymaster), or an OLD VCR, or a software patch for your capture card, if available.

  4. I personally use an auto video signal conditioner and a sima color corrector pro-series for removal of both level 1 (vhs and dvd) and level 2 (dvd) macrovision both purchased on the web after exhausting searches to find the lowest prices. This setup works pretty well and also allows me to adjust color from my DVD player, VCR, and Camcorder as well especially if you are really picky about video quality. This setup also allows to you dub from VCR to VCR as an added bonus. I decided to use this approach instead of hacking a DVD player or capture card. I also use the TVtool program as well because I was lucky enough to have a compatible graphics card in place with TV-out. You could also use the sima copymaster which is more widely available at stores like bestbuy and circuitcity. Even if an RF modulator would work, I would not use it because it knocks the video quality down from around 500 lines of resolution to about 330 lines.
