  1. I have used up around 15 disks trying to follow guides to rip DVDs on to DVDR but everytime I put the disk in my Toshiba SD100 it tells me 'disk error'. However, I can copy DVD's one to one using Nero and they work no problem.

The disks I create all have VIDEO_TS.IFO and BUP. All the correct VOB files, they just dont work.

    HELP!!!!

    thanks

Do you have these files in the /video_ts/ directory on the DVD?

Do they play on your DVD burner/player?

  4. I have the files in a VIDEO_TS Directory on root on the DVDR. The directory is in capitals letters.

It works fine on Power DVD on my PC and I can also use the dvd play option in IFOEDit to get it working also but not on a standalone player.

I am not sure how much help I can be here ... since I am just starting out with ripping DVDs, but I found that the standalone DVD players are not alway compatiable with the DVD you burn on your PC.

Recently I bought a DVD burner that will create DVD+R and DVD+RW, which was an HP burner. For the most part it was easy to use, but after trying it out ... I found out my DVD player standalone does not support the DVD+R or DVD+RW. From what I have read the DVD market is going towards the + media, but even my player that is only a few months old will not play it. I checked the site for HP and they listed players that are compatible with DVD+r and DVD+RW.

Not sure this will help ... but I figured I ran into it and you might as well.

  6. Further to my post above this is how I think I should be ripping a disk to put on a DVDR for playback in a standalone player - I am obviously doing something wrong.

    1. Open Smart Ripper and rip the disk to the computers hard disk. I do not use any specific settings for this. I just rip all the files.
    2. Create a VIDEO_TS directory on the hard disk.
    3. Open IFOEdit and load in the .IFO file from the rip for the movie VOB’s on the disk.
    4. Go into VOB Extras and select ‘Strip Streams’.
    5. Within the strip streams window, click on
    Strip Streams
Correct VOB-Unit (Navigation Pack) Pointers in VOB-Files
Correct IFO tabls with new VOB-Unit Information
    Create new VIDEO_TS.IFO and VTS_01_0.IFO
    Remove P-Uops
    Remove Macrovision
    Adjust VOB-Unit Pointers
    Adjust Audio /Subp Point

    6. This all goes in a destination directory of C:\VIDEO_TS
    7. I select the streams I want to strip and let IFOEdit do its stuff.
    8. Close IFOEdit.
    9. Re-open IFOEdit and open the newly created VTS_01_0.IFO.
    10. Click on Get VTS Sectors. This tells me it will update all IFO files to which I accept and save.
    11. Come out of IFOEdit, go back in and load up VTS_01_0.IFO and play DVD.
    12. Burn to a DVDR using Nero.

I can always get the video to play back through IFOEdit and PowerDVD from the hard disk and when burnt to a DVDR. I cannot get it to play on my standalone DVD player. I just get a disk error message. This is not down to the media as I can make one to one copies using Nero and this works fine on the standalone player.

If I examine the DVDR it all looks correct with the VIDEO_TS directory on the root of the DVDR and the files contained within this.

The only thing I can see I have done wrong is possibly not burnt the DVD with the correct settings on Nero but I do not know what these are apart from using UDF / ISO mode or DVD Video setting.

    Any help would be appreciated.

Man, someone really must be getting the "word" out there that +RW is taking over the market. Maybe it's in some alternate dimension.

...but that's another topic for another time. As my APEX will play either + or - media, it's just an academic question right now. Unfortuantely, your Toshiba player, even if it's fairly new, may not be as media-friendly. Many set-top players have incompatibilities of some sort or another, partial or entire, with the various recordable CD and DVD media.

+R/RW media is playable usually only in set-top players that specifically say they support it. A variety of Sony, Apex, Daewoo, and JVC players are capable of this now.

-RW media is an anomaly...it's about as compatible as +RW, which is to say, not much.

-R media is another story. 4.7GB -R's will play 90% of the time, and 3.95GB DVD-R's will play in better than 99% of every DVD player manufactured... they were designed for this.

Be aware that many DVD players can't even read CD-R and CD-RW media.

Depending on these and other factors, you might be burning perfectly compliant DVD's that your players just can't handle. The Playstation/2, for example, chokes horrifically on many media types and brands, while the Xbox, which I'm NOT fond of as a gaming device, is much more compatible with media. Then there are straight DVD players... hundreds of models out there, each with its own specs.

  8. I understand wht you are saying but the fact is that the media DOES play on my standalone player if I copy a DVD using Nero one to one.

I tried this on a Farscape sampler which is only single layer. Duplicated it with Nero and it works without a problem.

The problems I get are when creating a disk that has been ripped to hard drive and then burnt on to DVDR.

    thanks
