For some unknown reason, when I append 2 avi's ,the resulting large file has out of sync audio.
The 2 original files are ok and in sync.I did however have to convert the second file to 44100 to match it with the eventual VCD.

This seems quite a common problem people have, but before i go on are you sure your DVD player doesn't play 48khz sound cause ive tested it on 5 player now and they've all been fine but i dont know if its as common as i think, id recommend not downsampling unless you really need to.
As for the out of sync problem when joining AVI's, if one of the avi's is 44.1 and the other is 48 there will be a problem, if you can have both as 48 keep it that way, but if not then try this.
Add the first avi to virtualdub and select direct stream on the video and full processing on the audio, select no compression and no change on all the settings but change it to 44.1 if you must, then save the avi, once thats done open up the second avi and do the same thing with that and save it.
Now open the first avi again and click on append add second and set the video and audio to direct stream, and save it, you should now have 2 large avis and one huge one, delete the 2 small ones you wont need them again.
now you have a joined avi but im betting if you followed what i said the audio is still out of sync, but im guessing your gonna split this file over a certain amount of discs, now heres the strange part.
The appended avi will be badly out of sync in any player you use it in, but if you cut it into pieces its not, trust me this works for me every time and ive helped a few other people too with it

Martyn,
You were dead on with your assessment of the problem.
I did indeed append them together ...it went out of sync......split it again into 3 pieces and..Hey Presto!..everything is synced up again.
It leaves me scratching my head though!
Thanks

No Problem,
Im still not sure why it does this and if any one out there knows why, or if anyone knows somewhere that explains it, it would be much appreciated.
