I am trying to convert captured AVI to VCD compliant MPEG 1. I use AIW capture and have no trouble with the AVI. I then use VDUB to split out the audio (as I have seen done in the guides). Then I use TMPG to make the VCD compliant file.

I ALWAYS have audio sync problems.

Should I skip the VDUB step and just use the AVI ?

Is there some other issue. This should not be so difficult yet it seems to always be an issue....Help is much appreciated.

By the way, it is not a speed issue.

I have a home built PC
    ASUS P4S333 2.0 P4
    1 gig memory (PC2700..very fast)
3 hard drives, all 2 ata 100, 1 ata 133 ...All fat 32 except the capture drive which I made NTSF for AVI
ALL IN WONDER 128 Pro card

    Thanks in advance.....

  2. I cant answer your question without some more info. Sync problems come in many forms.
Is the sync offset by the same amount all through the mpg or does it start OK and get worse as the movie plays, if so, which way does it drift (audio ahead or behind video).

Even with this info I can't guarantee to solve your problems but without it, it is unlikley anybody can!

    I should have been clearer..sorry.

The sound lags the lips(movement) by about 1/2 to a full second, consistant throughout. What bugs me is this happens consistantly. I would think the transition should be easier. I did try skipping the VDUB step and use the AVI as input to TMPG. Same result ( I did a short test). If I play the AVI, it is perfect.

I know I can use goldwave to sync them with trial and error BUT what a pain. Is there anything special that causes this ? Am I missing some codec ? The reason I ask this way is I just expected that the transition from one to the other should be fairly easy.

I am using TMPG 2.54.37.135 which is new, but does the same with old version. AT LEAST ITS CONSISTANT !!! What about upping the VFAPI plug-in (currently set at 0 level ) ...I am VERY new at capture/convert, thats why the guessing. DVD ripping , no problem....LOL

    Thanks again in advance.

  4. I use Smart Ripper to rip the dvd's.

DVD2AVI to convert to .vob files.

TMPGEnc to convert to .mpg. (I increase volumne to 400%)

NTI Cd-Maker Pro to burn unto cdr.

    Never had a synch problem.

Running Windows XP Home. Maybe you can try those programs. Sorry if I'm not lots of help, I'm not too techinical on this, I just knows what works for me.

You should be able to convert to Mpeg-1 with no sync problems by just loading the AVI into TMPGenc and converting it. If the resulting Mpeg is out of sync, demux the Mpeg into audio and video streams (m1v, m1a) and find out the exact length of the video portion in seconds in TMPGenc. Convert the audio to wave and load up into a sound editor like SoundForge or Cool Edit. Either add silence or remove silence until the audio and video lengths are the same. Take the wave file and mux it back into the video and make a compliant vcd in TMPGenc. The audio and video should be in sync. It sounds like a lot of work, but it isn't. Should take only a couple minutes once you get the hang of it...

  6. i hv had this problem wif some of the Divx files that i dled, this is what happened wif mine, the audio was compressed at some BS rate like instead of the normal 128 or 224 ...etc it was converted at like 120k or 117 k, so this is what i did to solve it. Use VDUB extract the audio out into a wav file then use a mp3 encoder to encode it to a standard KBit/s (128 .. ect ) after that just use that mp3 files when u do the conversion

    good luck

I should have been clearer...First I will try to Demux, measure, fix with Goldwave and then REMUX. I need to know how to tell the exact video length though....

If that doesn't work I will try the MP3 route.

Bottom line though is I would like to knwo why a simple convert leaves me approx. 0.282 seconds off(video ahead of audio) . Is this an ATI bug. Just to see, I am even using ATI MMC 7.6 (which came out for radeon) as I am told it works fine for ATI RAGE. It does since it is only the MMC not the driver. It is somewhat better, but I think their BOOK codes are off. Example of this is they never set standard VCD compliance correctly and you need the MMC reg tool to correct. Sigh.

i think the problem is that the sound card cant keep up with the video card, load your avi into virtual dub select frame rate under the video menu set so audio and video duration match then resave avi in direct stream copy if the avi sync looks good load into tmpeg, works perfect for me every time

That sounds logical...excpet, why does the AVI come out fine sine that is what is CATCHING both audio and video ? They are in sync...but when it gets to TMPG, TMPG is casing the 1/4 second lag.But hey, I will try whatever works.

Just use the AVI. Don't worry about de-multiplexing. Just load it, and go!

I've never experienced any audio sync problems.

When all else fails, keep it simple.

    Well.

I tried everything here and NO JOY. I even tried one of the links in another TOPIC about using virtual dub and the DO NOT FRAME RATE CONVERT in TMPG. No luck. Basically, I am stuck with the manual method of trying to find out if i am exactly .287 seconds off or not.

Tried to see if there is a diffence in the file between the length of the AVI (51.33.388) movie and the wav, 51.34.500. But if I take a little over a second off, I am WAYYY off. So no help.UGG.

Why can't this just work as it should ?

What type of sound card tho?
Some sound chipsets (crystal) may require audio be sampled
at a lower bitrate while others (SB Live) often need sound to be
sampled at 44.1Hz and nothing else.

Thank you !! I like it and its home made...Beats my DELL hands down...LOL

Anyway, sound card is a Creative Labs SB 512 PCI. Heres whats funny...
The AVI's are perfectly in sync. When I convert to MPEG 1 (for VCD) It is exactly .375 of a second off on every one(give or take .001 or so). So if I clip that amount off the front of the wav file ( I extract the wav using virtual dub), then the movie syncs all the way through, perfectly.

I have tried the straigh AVI as audio and video input to TMPG and same result. So I wind up extracting wav, deleting the first .375th of a second and viola, perfect sync. MAKES NO SENSE ....An VDUB says no bad frames found.
I would blame the sound card if the AVI was off but it isn't. It has to be an initial timing issure with TMPG where it is process the first 10 frames before making sound...Just a guess. I just downloaded the latest TMPG and I will test that.

One other question. After converting a 2 hour wedding video I notice, the VIDEO looks like video, the VCD looks like a movie, color, tone, etc. Is that normal ???

    Thanks again.........

P.S. - System note - I made 1 partition of one of my hard drives (120 gig western digital) NTSF to avoid size restrictions, but if not for that, GIMME FAT32 anytime. All three drives normally run at 7 msec response time EXCEPT now the NTSF drive which alarms PC PITSTOP as slow.....Have to check with SiSoft Sandra what the MEG PER SEC is ...but it can't be good.

  15. Acrorob,
Couldn't you accomplish the same thing by using the audio gap correction function in TMPGenc? If not, how do you go about truncating the length of your .wav file in VDUB to match your video duration?

    Thanks in advance!

Just a quick point, if you want to avoid Audio sync problems dont use Mp3's always convert it to an uncompressed wav and load it into the audio part of Tmpg, or Try the full processing part and mix the uncompressed audio with the video then just put the whole file into Tmpg, rather than seperate video and audio, and the reason the bitrate of the sound is some BS bitrate is because its VBR, so you can get better quality on a smaller filesize.

Do you use the internal audio convertor in Tmpg, if so try using too lame as an external one.

Have you tried using DVD2SVCD and using the avi conversion part of it, just a thought, cause if the avi plays fine then if you encode it properly then so should the mpg, without you having to edit out any of the audio afterwards.

    :P

Wow ...Thats alot of info !!!

As far as the audio GAP correction, I probably could use the one in TMPG however, since I was stripping out the Uncompressed WAV, it was just as easy to do it with Goldwave. And as far as losing .375 of a second at the end, no effect. I dont know why.

I don't use MP3's so not an issue.

    Here is my standard process.

I use the ATI All in wonder capture set for CUSTOM, AVI preset at 720 by 480. 1 hour of video takes about 76 GIG !!!!

I take the AVI output file and run through VDUB to extract the wav. I set it for NO COMPRESSION PCM, set to 44100, extract and now I have a wav file.

I go into TMPG and feed the original AVI as the source video.
    The extracted wav as audio.
I use the NTSC template (29.97fps) and convert the whole thing.
I get that gap of .375

Now I try the same thing using the AVI for both AUDIO and VIDEO, same result. Out of sync.

As I say, I have yet to try the newest version of TMPG on this file...will post results.

Thanks again to all........I wish there was a simple fix for this, like a setting in TMPG that maybe I overlooked.

I dont think it is the card or the avi, because if it plays fine before its encoded then theres nothing wrong with the avi.

You say you feed the avi and set it to no compression PCM 44.1, is the original file 44.1, i like to always use 48, but if i have something which is 44.1 i wont change it, as you can loose quality and sync.

I agree !!! Lets help this guy ...LOL

But I agree partially that its not the card. I still think ATI is the culprit and I will tell you why. I tdon't think their BOOK specs are up to spec. I don't know enough about it to be sure but for example, why don't they have the complete VCD compliance ? They say they do, yet most have to use the MMC reg too to get 1.15 meg per sec .

Also, any time I ever captured with ATI software, if I then CUT/SPLIC, whatever with another tool then CREATE MOVIE, WHAM, I am out of sync. I can't believe that every other tool is at fault, but I do believe ATI has some bugs in what is created. Sure, it plays, but the file they create holds the KEYS to what you would convert to ....making it difficult to get a clean conversion. Now if I capture with ULEAD, or something like that, I don't seem to have issues, but again, not enough time working with them.

By the way, the 44100 might be 48000 , I am not sure from here at work but it is right from the VDUB - FILE , SHOW STATS or whatever its called. In other words, I go with what it was set for.

Will be better to post from home. Not trying to make a mega thread here but perhaps we can help alot of folks out here IF we can figure out HOW to go straight from CAPTURE to CONVERT to BURN without having to resync and guess.

    Thanks again to ALL !!!

BTW - Smearbrick - Try this and see if its the same. Get a copy of GOLDWAVE (free) and LOAD AVI file. Then go to EDIT MARKER SET and set the start at 0, end at .375 You will see a small block. Go to EDIT / DELETE. It will delete that first .375 of a second. Then SAVE WAV as a different name(so you keep original). Use this new wav in the conversion and see if its converted in sync.

  21. You might want to give MMC 7.7 a try. It seems that it fixed a lot of MPEG A/V sync issues for some people (I've personally never had any problems even with older versions, but it seems to be very often related to the chipset+soundcard combination)

  23. Please help this guy and help me too!!!

Where do you get MMC 7.7? I've checked out tools, doom9 & internet search and can't find anything about it.

I am having audio/video sync problems too. I have alot of stargate sg1 divx files I want to transfer to svcd but am having a problem with them. They all have ac3 audio. I have followed all the guides on this site religously and still have problem. I have extracted audio from avi using vdub, renamed ac3. converted ac3 to wav and then encoded with tmpgenc. several versions. all are out of sync. I don't think it is a hardware issue. any other avi for me that did not have ac3 audio seems to be fine, except when I rip a dvd.

    hardware:
    amd xp 1800+
    768mb pc333 ddr ram
    geforce 4 4400 128mb v/c
    sb live! 5.1
    3 h/d 80gig, 60gig & 40gig raid 0.

also were do you set the audio gap in tmpgenc?

If you need anymore info please let me know.

  24. Just another question, I have sonic foundry soundforge & cool edit. how do I cut off a few sec's on the audio. also, I have the exact length of the audio and believe to have the time for video and seems to be longer. How do I get the exact time foe the video? I know I can use vdub for avi but what about for mpg?

    Thanx again

I tried using Soundforge and Cool Edit but the guide on this site for correcting sync errors using Goldwave was much simpler. Now, if only we had a tool for giving the exact length of the video portion down to 3 decimal places, I would be happy. TMPGEnc rounds to the nearest second which is unacceptable...
