I want to rip a dvd but i don't have a dvd player in built in my computer. Can i connect my external hitachi dvd player up to my computer and rip that way. Is this possible.

Well, you can't "rip" it in the usual sense of the term (i.e. exact digital copy), but you can dub it (akin to copying tape to tape), but even though you will skip the CSS encryption making an analog copy, there is still macrovision that will mess with your effort, unless you have a means to defeat it (there are several) or if your capture card is one that ignores macrovision.
On the other hand, consider that a DVD-ROM drive can cost as little as $50, if not a bit less.As Churchill famously predicted when Chamberlain returned from Munich proclaiming peace in his time: "You were given the choice between war and dishonor. You chose dishonor, and you will have war."
