You shouldn't loose any quality from mpg to Divx but you would have a loose of quality if you were going from Divx to mpg.

You would loose quality if you capture in Mpeg2 first then divx cuz you can have higher resoultions in divx mpeg2 which is svcd brings down the resoultion to 480x480 and you can't have anything better then that resoultion.
So the best thing to do is convert to divx in the first place using the dvds vob files i hope this helps if im wrong someone please correct me.
and the resoultion of a dvd is 720x480 i think -
oh my mistake if converting over to pal svcd the res would be 480x576 so you could get a little higher then 480x480
NTSC
480x480 is a compliant NTSC SVCD
PAL
480x576 is a compliant PAL SVCD -
No you can I have some Divx files that are 352x240 and some that are 480x480 you have prblems reencoding to VCD or SVCD if they are. And this is capturing not from a DVD.

Some divx's are encoded in dvd res so on some divx the resoultion and the sound can be better like ac3 can be put in divx but if your not messin with dvd quality stuff you can capture to mpeg2 but it would be faster just to encode to divx in the first place

evening all.
Yes! Nonsense! You will loose quality! Period!
Weather it's 720x480 or 480x480 or whatever that you are encoding FROM.
When you first encode to ANYTHING, you've already lost quality,
cause you are encoding (compressing) to mpeg. Doesn't matter if
you encode at very high bitrate either, even if you chose 9000!!
So, when you re-encode to divX or anything else, you will loose some
more quality a 2nd time.
Why people do this anyways? Well, for some, it's because they don't
have enough harddrive space, ie, 5gigs and so, whta they do is capture
direct to MPEG-2 for ie, and then re-encode via TMPG. The trade-off
is additional quality loss or for instance, color washout, hence your
loss in quality. To some, it may not be too noticable. The only thing
I can suggest is to try it out for yourself!
But, yes, you will loose... there is some quality loss going on with
this route.

Anytime you encode to (or convert from) a file using a 'lossy' codec, your quality will degrade a teeny bit.
As Churchill famously predicted when Chamberlain returned from Munich proclaiming peace in his time: "You were given the choice between war and dishonor. You chose dishonor, and you will have war."
