what is the difference between Disc-At-Once and Track-At-Once? I have been getting a few problems with block noise in mpg files copied from cd to my hard drive. ( not vcd files, just regular 1.25mbit mpg files ). I found a program called ISOBuster and extracted the file with that and there were no problems anymore. I also cut my recording speed from 20x t0 16x. Then i seen the setting under it for TAO and DAO.

well i read it. does this mean that possible the problems were gaps in the recorded file? i have moticed the cd-rw drive spinning up and stopping in the middle of writing but the recorder buffer never emptied and it did have any problems. Possible? is DAO better than TAO?

  4. i always use dao, but that's because my burner doesn't do tao. you shouldn't burn faster than 8x it's likley to skip even with all the protection the companies say their burners have

Haha, I dreamed of 8x back in the days of my first burner, a "(not so)Smart&Friendly CD-Racer CDRW-2224". This half an hour to burn a music CD, but it was very cool to be able to burn any CD at all!

  8. I use a TDK 12/10/32 to burn DAO at 12x, and I never have any problems with MPEGs burned as SVCD or BIN/CUE. My roommate burns all of his stuff at 32x and never has any problems either. Maybe it depends on RAM? 384 MB PC100 in mine, 768 MB DDR in his.

my first cd recorder was a refurbished 4x Sony. It worked great but it was too slow, so i picked up new ACER 24x/10x for $85. i have 576mb PC133, PC100 ram ( 512 PC 133, 64 PC 100, or vice versa ). as i said i am going to stick with Fuji or Memorex, i have some fujis that i recorded with mpegs last november and they work great, just tried one today. The Fujis are $20 for a 50 pack at K-Mart, closest store that carries cd-rs. Plus i have an interview for a job there tomorrow so hopefully i will get an employee discount.

  10. ram is not very important a fast hard drive is more important... at more than 8x you risk getting errors with data it's not very important but music and video it can be anoying...

  11. Anyone ever look on the side of burners faster than 12x and see how they burn the media differnet at 16, 20, 24, 32, thats another reason why only yo burn your VCD's and SVCD's at 8x and no faster, don't pay to burn one at 16 or 24 and find out its bad and have to redo it all over again and then have not saved any time at all and remember it may play fine on your DVD but not the next one you stick it in, at 8x I have had 100% playback on any DVD player that can play VCD or SVCD.
Why complain about 8x when everyone here takes 6-8 hours to rip DVD's, talk about TIME! I make up the time when burning at 8x by using a MPEG2 capture card, 2 hour movie takes 2 hours.
I also burn ALL video VCD or SVCD using DAO.

  12. 6-8 Hours to rip a DVD?!?I know I rarely rip DVDs larger than 5 gigs, but still, I have usually been able to do it in under an hour using SmartRipper, very fast program.
You're not really going into an astroid field are you?!?

i just had a thought. Since i dont make vcds just make cd so i can copy the file to my hd and watch it. and 16x is godd for data cd, would it help to put the mpg files in a zip, rar, or ace file? not compress them just use the store setting.

  15. Well, Big Bad Bob, you could try raring or ace-ing the files, but I'm not sure that they would compress that well. I know that AVIs don't compress that well, but Mpegs I haven't really checked b/c I burn them as VCD or SVCD. But, if you have Nero, you should be able to burn an MPEG as a data CD(CD-ISO). However, you may have a problem with Mpegs over 700 MBs because the typical data CD will use 100 MBs for error correction while the SVCD or VCD has the error correction built in.
BTW: When reading an SVCD/VCD you can go to the MPEGAV or MPEGx folder and find the pertinent MPEG.

if you're not playing your cds on a tv, why don't you use divx?
you'll get much better compression, and you'll be able to keep the same or nearly the same quality, plus use ac3 sound if you like.
    just a thought

the reason i'm asking about putting the files into archives like zip, ace, rar or a file splitter, is you said that faster than 8x recording has problems with audio and video, but not as bad for data. I was thinking that putting them into archives ( not compressed ) it would look like data to the computer then when i opened it it would be eaiser for it to copy to the harddrive, without the problems, Anybody know if this is true?

some people have problems with burning faster than 8x and playing back on their standalones...I burn at 12x and have never had a problem.
I suggested using divx because if you're going to burn your movies in mode 1(data) you'd be better off(IMHO) encoding to divx vs. mpeg because with divx you can fit a movie on 1 disc, and still have approximately the same quality as you would with mpeg.

ok i know divx is much better than mpeg. what settings do i use. I have tried Vdub to convert mpg to divx without losing any of the quality. But to get the same quality in DivX i have to make a bigger file.
