With the whole WorldCom scandal now we've got customers calling in left and rigth to cancel their service. Fortunately for me I work in the bilingual dept so it's not affecting my job to bad. However, since I took the day off on Friday I went in on Saturday and boom!; 10 supervisors, 4 managers gone. And now we've got about 50 new recruits starting next week! Do you wonder why we're in so much trouble?
I get calls all the time now about people asking me why I'm still there and how I should leave. Occassionally I also get the usual smartass who calls in to complain about his bill and says he's not going to help MCI from getting out of trouble.
So far what are your view on this whole telecom thing in general? Seem like the economy is just getting worse. I don't see it getting any better any time soon. It's cool Dubya froze WorldCom's assets and barred and execs from the grounds until an investigatoin is completed, but from experience I know they'll just let everyone walk with no severance no nothing. I just hope the older people who are about to retire don't get screwed like Enron did.

Yeah this sort of thing has become more and more common. Not just on the multi national level...i saw it happen 3 times last year with some auto supply companies. Ended up just shutting the doors and screwing everyone that worked there out've everything. hope that won't be the case here. good luck!

Sorry to hear that Bullworth, but It is typical corporate B.S.(caca del toro)
ceo's in thier ivory towers making bad decisions that effect thousands
of employees and millions of investors. And when the caca hits the fan
the ceo's inside-trade and retire with a healthy severence package and claim they knew nothing. -
They will have to sell off MCI to one of their competitors who will eventually consolidate their holdings. I'd be looking for another job but my guess there's no need to panic (assuming that MCI has decent cash flow).
I'd say the same for UUNET also. Some of their other companies are truly f*cked. -
Hard to tell what would happen if the crap really hit the fan: MCI has 30 billion in debts and only 2 billion left in liquid assets. I know you may think that's alot but when you're thinking about how much operating costs are it depends how long it can last unless it's well managed.
More bad news for today is that our manager is taking a month of well deserved vacation. In his place during that time will be a lady who has reputation of having an extra set of brass ones. Blink once and you're gone. At least with all these layoffs the call volumne has dramatically increased, also increaseing the amount of overtime. Good for me since I've got alot of bills to pay off and alot of money to save up for just in case.
I'm still going to look elsewhere because I don't plan on going down with the ship like I did with my last job. -
They can still declare bankruptcy which will wipe out their debts then sell off MCI to another long distance company. Exactly why do so many people want to switch just because your company is doing badly? Does it affect the quality or price of the service. I don't understand.

Bullworth, sorry to hear about your situation, but it is common. Companies borrow rediculous amounts of money and hope to not only pay back the money, but to also make a large profit. What the companies fail to realize is that they can only sell so much in services, so making a profit twice of what they made the previous year is not a realistic goal. When they find themselves in finacial trouble, they blame the workers and try to quickly make up for the incompetence of the people at the top by laying off the actual people who need jobs.
