  1. Right now, I have a source with PCM (Uncompressed) Audio.

I want to compress it, but I wouldn't know where to begin. What would be the best way/settings to set for optimal compression, without losing the quality. It would be OK if some quality is lost, but nothing drastic.

Oh, and the total length of the video is 2 minutes and 53 seconds.

It's obvious I'm a newbie at this stuff. So please be gentle. Hehe.

    Thanks in advance.

    Sampling rate : 48000Hz
    Channels : 2 (Stereo)
    Sample precision : 16-bit
    Compression : PCM (Uncompressed)
    Preload skew : 24000 samples (0.50s)
    # of frames : 5199
    Min/avg/max/total frame size : 6088/6423/96000 (32614K)

Encode it to mp3. If you convert it to a mp3 with the bitrate about 192kbps, you should be pleased with the result of the sound.

    Video ?

Do you have Video or Audio or both ?. What are you going to do with this file when you have finished compressing it ?

  4. OK, to answer KingJohn's question might change Helmut's advice.

Yes, this is a source with BOTH Audio and Video. Yes, it's quite short (2 minutes and 53 seconds). I've compressed the Video source into Divx already, to cut down on the file size. Before any compression, it was over 600 Megs.

So now I want to compress the Audio, because the Audio source is larger than the Video source.

So now I have a source with compressed Video, and uncompressed Audio. Can I still work with this? I still have the original 600+ MB file.

With my new file (compressed Video/uncompressed Audio), I tried compressing the Audio the way Helmut suggested (mp3.192kbps, 48000Hz, Stereo, 24KB/s). And I get an error that reads "Error initializing audio stream compression."

I tried compressing BOTH the Video and Audio on the 600+ MB file, and it still gives me the same error. Is there supposed to be a special way to compress both sources?

If anyone can help, then I would be very thankful.

    Thanks in advance.

Ah, thought you may have a video somehow, if you wanted to compress the audio separate, you could use www.goldwave.com (With MP3 add-ons on the same download page)

But both can be done in Vdub at the same time, if you are happy with your video and don't want to do that again, you can continue with just the audio, Vdub can do it, but you may need to select something different to what you selected

DivX audio is also as good as the MP3 available in the list. Some of the codec's bitrates will give you that error, just experiment and you will find one that works. They do play up if you go from stereo to mono or back, and naturally if you select the wrong frequency you will end up with a fast or a slow speed.

If you have Nimo installed you will have huge selection avaiable.
