  1. Is a VCD just mpg movies on a cdr?

  2. If you just copied a plain old MPG file onto a CDR then it will not play on a stand-alone player... What you need is Nero, this has the option to burn VCDS....

Well almost the mpeg has a new header and renamed to a .dat file, but apart from that yes it’s the same. As for playing them on you DVD player, well that’s another thing.

Does you player play VCD's, does it also play CDR. Does it like a particulate brand of CD's. Are you making the VCD's fully compliant... And more....

  8. Although there is something to be said for just dumping loads of MPG files to a CDR.
You can change the bitrate to the Nth degree in either direction, I once fit 135 minutes of VID onto a 650MB CD.
Sure the quality was poor and you had to watch it on the PC but if youre pressed for space theres nothing like it.

    Absolutely not.

    A VCD is not an MPEG file on a CD-ROM. A VCD isn't even a CD-ROM.

Both the physical and logical structure of a S/VCD are important. If you don't use a program that actually knows how to correctly author a VCD, it will definitely NOT work in the vast majority of players.

    Your a joke !!

What are you on about, I am pointing out that the mpeg on the cd is the same mpeg that was originally made on the computer, I have not mentioned anything about the CD-ROM structure, or the fact it it needs to be created with a VCD authoring program. Jus the facts that the mpeg is exactly the same.

The answer is yes, the disk is a CD-R which plays on a CD-ROM, just because the disk has been authored into two tacks, does not make it anything other than a CD-R. If you have mis-understood this, then tuff

VCD's originals are not CD-R, but any that is made on a computer are, which play in a CD-ROM you dont need a DVD player for them do you.

    Read the original poster carefully.

What you wrote seemed to imply that a VCD wasn't nothing more than an MPEG file on a CD (which to the average newbie -- "Newbie Forum" means "CD-ROM"). This is a public forum and not only the original poster of the thread will read it.

Relevance?? Obviously anything burnt on a CD-R is "still a CD-R".

If you thought my post was in-adequate then elaborate by all means, but to come back with stupid contradiction to factual information was NOT needed.

When was the last time you bought a box of blank VCD's ?

The original post might not have been very clear, but what was said was "Is a VCD just mpg movies on a cdr?"

The correct answer is yes, the VCD is a mpeg on a CDR, the fact that I said that its header has been changed, and the file is now a .dat would indicate that its structure has changed. My answer was correct, but obviously not good enough for you.

Unlike you, I don't treat all newbie's with content and think they are stupid, I assume they know the basics, unless they say otherwise

You may have missed the second post by mh2360

    Which already points out this
