  1. Hi guys,

Im currently authoring SVCDs, and I wanted to know which Silver color DVD players can play SVCD disks back flawlessly (Fully complient SVCDs). In addition to flawless playback, does anyone have a silver color DVD player which also correctly brakes down SVCDs two audio channels so that in addition to two stereo streams you can play Left speaker only, or Right speaker only (Eg, for Chinese movies)?

If anyone has a Silver color DVD player which can do this, I would greatly appreciate it if you could post your manufacture, model number, price you paid for it as well as any other general comments/tips/Authoring Compatability notes.

    Thanks, I really appreciate it!

  4. Hey guys,

Actualy I have been thinking about the Pioneer DV-444, however when I author my SVCD disks, I use Tmpgenc i (SVCD template). I follow SVCD specs for bitrate, and other features. The problem is, on my friends DV-444, I noted that some movies started to freeze, or blow chunky blocks on the screen. Im unsure what the cause is, but It would really be bad if the unit doesn't play standard SVCDs because all my CDs are up to standards and I don't want to redo them.

FYI, I have been told the max bitrate is slighty under SVCD specs? Ether than, or its the audio emphesis option which needs to be changed to fix the problem?

  5. About Apex brands, I have seen most (if not all) don't allow multi-channel audio selection. You can't take one of the SVCD tracks and do Left only or Right only.

As a precausion I never exceeds the max bitrate. In fact I almost stay a little under it:

    Videobitrate: 2496
    Audiobitrate: 224

When quality is an issue (edited DV-fragments for example) I use CBR@2496 or the following VBR specs:
    min: 1200-1800 (just try
    avg: 2200
    max: 2496

Time is no issue, so I batch-encode 1 CBR, and 2 or 3 VBR with different min-bitrates

  7. Hey Trenton

If you search hard enough through this forum you should find my thread regarding problems with the DV-444 and TMPGenc.

Basically, I discovered (with much help from these guys) that TMPGenc doesn't encode to SVCD 'standard' even with the SVCD template.
It took me a long time to find the best TMPGenc settings but I got there in the end.
Now I make superb quality SVCDs with no jumps, lockups, large block artifacts etc etc.

You're more than welcome to try my template. Email me if you want it.

    Hope this helps!

    Sue xxx
