Also, newsgroups are more stringent about quality. There are no fakes. Hell, people get flamed for posting non-complaint VCDs to the VCD group.
Download music videos from Kazaa or IRC and you'll find that many of the people who cap them are deaf - or think we are. Audio levels so high they're clipped beyond recognition, or perhaps so low they're almost imperceptible. Garbled, blocky, just plain nasty looking video, sometimes in bizarre, off-the-wall resolutions. VCDs converted to SVCDs by a third party so he could add his handle to the filename or worse, the video stream, and claim it as his own. It's a pretty sad situation.
On Usenet they have full time cappers who crank out some dazzling SVCD music videos. An army of downloaders are the critics, pointing out any flaws and suggesting improvements. The cappers listen and the results are the best on the Internet.

It's also not fun waiting in an IRC fserve queue for 12 hours or more, only to have the guy running the server decide to turn it off - or clear his queue - or move others ahead of you in the queue. Ugh.Also, newsgroups are more stringent about quality. There are no fakes. Hell, people get flamed for posting non-complaint VCDs to the VCD group.

#2 5x [609M] Spider-Man.VCD.Screener-THCiSO CD2
going to tell me those are fake, or that they took too long to get uploaded?

or are you going to say this is too slow? I dont even think you scratched the surface of the program the time you have tried it baseband, maybe you should so you will know what your talking about next time. -

Learn to use the program? Dude, I've been using mIRC since 1995. I used to write scripts for it when I was a teen with too much free time.
Also, sorry if I sounded ambiguous. Kazaa is the realm of the fakes. Aside from fake video game system boot discs and things like that, I've never seen anything fake on IRC. Poor quality? Yes. Fake? No.
Now, what do you mean "the higher channels?" Are you talking about the semi-secret channels for ops, servers, and other IRC royalty? If so, I really don't have the time to suck up to ops and serve for several months before I get access to something like this. If not, well, then I've spent hundreds (probably thousands) of hours downloading stuff and searching for new channels on IRC.
All of the most populous channels on Dalnet and Efnet (even worse with them) are chock full of encouraging things like :
Sends 1/1 Queues: 49/50
Sends 2/2 Queues: 140/150
The ones with low (or no) queues tend to be non-working fserves, people who have little to share, or those pathetic idiots serving in the wrong channel for some reason (e.g. someone serving 6,000 MP3s and nothing else in a channel for Simpsons episodes - and it happens WAY more than you'd think).
If you've got some secret channels you go to, it just means that you sucked up to the right people, not that you have some superior knowledge of the program that's bewildering to us mere mortals.
As far as the newsgroups go, yes I do pay for a news server. I think it's worth every penny. My 200 Dreamcast games would agree. With Usenet, I can spend my time downloading and not telling Ops how great they are and waiting in endless queues, only to eventually get dumped.
Also, IRC is turing into Divxland. Seems like every day fewer and fewer TV episodes (that's generally what I'm downloading, not movies) are available in (S)VCD, probably due to their large file size. In contrast, the MPEG scene on Usenet is thriving because people only have to upload videos ONCE instead of sending the same file to 200 different people.
The one thing IRC does have over Usenet, though, is one of the most amazing - preair episodes. I have actually downloaded first run episodes of the Simpsons a full 30 hours before they aired. When asked to explain how they get these, cappers usually cook up some BS about other time zones. However, to anyone familiar with the International Date Line, this can't explain a 30 hour difference. It's either that excuse, or the cappers simply won't tell.
Maybe I should start sucking up to them... -
As far as p2p programs go, they all have their benefits and drawbacks.
Kazaa has probably the most intuitive interface and is probably the most "noob" friendly p2p application out there. The only problem with it is that there seems to be many people (kids) who enjoy passing off fake files and an abundance of virus/trojans. If your new to the p2p scene, kazaa is not a bad place to start to get your feet wet and play around with file sharing. If you already have kazaa installed, I would recommend that you download kazaalite, uninstall kazaa, run adaware to get rid of the trojan network and spyware kazaa installed and then re-install kazaalite. Its the same program without the backdoor trojan sharman networks was so nice to install on peoples systems. If you do go this route, please make sure you have a virus scanner with up to date definitions, and use some common sense in the files you choose to download. i.e GTA3 or LOTR is not going to be a 1.4 meg .exe or .vbs file.
Morpheus was a great application before it switched over to the gnutella network, I wouldnt recommend this simply for the slower download speeds and lesser file selection than kazaa.
Direct connect is a decent program...the only problem with it is the sharing quota required to get into some hubs and the propensity of people to terminate your download on a whim if you dont have a file they want or if they simply dont want you downloading off of them. I use this program on occasion to hook up with friends that I know to do swaps, I dont, however, download from people I dont know with it. for the above reasons.
Edonkey is probably the best file sharing program out there if you're willing to deal with its glitches and its occasional refusal to connect to any servers or to download files. Some days it will run like a champion and you'll be downloading everything you have queued...other days your files will sit and not transfer for hours, if not days on end. It is a program that is best used in a "fire and forget" attitude..i.e start a download and dont look at it for a day or so, and dont expect it to continuously download at blazing fast speeds. Sometimes you might get 100k transfer and others you might get a .5. It all depends. Probably the single greatest thing about the donk is that it forces people to share. If you want something you have to give something. People cannot just arbitrarily cancel your downloads.
And last but not least you have the mighty newsgroups. There are many pay to play binary newsgroup providers out there and these are probably the most hassle free and enjoyable source of all. With a decent connection you can get sustainable 100-200k download speeds and get what you came for in a matter of an hour or so. They do come with a caveat tho, you pay for access and unless your willing to fork out 40-60 bucks a month for unlimited download bandwidth you're typically limited to around 6 gig a month for around 10 to 12 dollars. These newsgroups also require you to be familiar with more programs than kazaa or morpheus, such as winrar, parity checkers, sfv checkers, nfo readers and the like. Overall the quality of whatever you get is going to be consistently better with newsgroups - but that's a privilege you pay for, which the other p2p programs dont have to contend with.
So whats the best file sharing program? its all a matter of opinion and personal preference. I myself use a mix of them all. -
Depends on what you're looking for. If you're looking for 5 days old releases reencoded by scum "groups" like TMD and SMR, Kazaa is the place. It is a nice place to pick up DVD rips though, just make sure you quantify your searches with groups like Diamond and Vite.
IRC is nice when you get to private channels, i.e. the ones you'll never hear about. 200-500K/s and releases within hours aren't uncommon in some places, but even so, IRC sucks compared to topsites.
Contribute or buy your way into a group listed on isonews or vcdqual, have 0sec access to 100mbit boxes with 1Tb+ of space and be done with it. -
whats the best Program to use to get on these newsgroups? please email me or post on the board... thanks

Hey guys- I thought I'd throw in my own 2 cents on this issue,
I am 16 and have been doing mp3s years before Napster came out, and I remember the good old days of CuteMX (which I think was the best P2P ever designed). I also have downloaded files off of Irc, but I have yet to try a newsgroup. Anyways... If you have half a brain, you can tell which files are real and good quality off Kazaa. If a movie just came out, chances are the quality is not going to be great, lets just admit that to our selves. Only a few times have I ever been satisfied with pre-release movies. Also, the preview movie trick works very nicely, if you don't know what I'm talking about, go to the guides forum. Anyways I think that all you Kazaa bashers are just so full of yourselves and you like to boast your technical ability of being able to find and download files off of fileservers. Whoop de freaking do. Fileservers are almost always full, and I don't care about any "super-secret" channels you may have found. IRC and FTP servers, like Gnuttella, are good alternatives to turn to when we will inevitably lose real P to P. But I think that Kazaa (and p2p) is much more time-effecient- I don't have the time to be ******* around with fileservers for just 1 mp3 or movie. Anways right now I am downloading gladiator divx dvd--rip off kazaa at 50 kb/sec and yes, it is the real thing.- Aaron -
I dont know what you people find so hard about mIRC. I taught myself how to use it in about a week. Now I wouldnt turn back to P2P. If you cant teach yourself then do a search for a beginner guide about mIRC. As for the quality just think of it like a game of chinese whispers. By the time P2P people get the secret(movie) it is totally screwed and takes for ages.

Sig2dat is the most helpful tool EVER for the Kazaa and iMesh user.
Verified movies ELIMINATES the fakes! Isnt that what everyone is complaing about?! HELLO?!
www.fasttrackmovies.com
thats one of the places that is compiling the sig2dat files. These guys verified that the movie is real, so NO MORE FAKES, you use the sig2dat program (super easy) and voila your downloading the REAL file.
I just found this program, and so far it works 100%. Every sig2dat file I selected from fasttrackmovies was the REAL THING.
here is the sig2dat download www.geocities.com/vlaibb
Anyone know of any other sites out there like fasttrackmovies? -
I have to agree on sig2dat...
The only thing it really needs is more web sites listing "certified" sig2dat files, not just these forums that seem to be out...
In fact, these IRC people would probably do much better to release movies this way... the sharing among multiple servers (instead of their own) would be valuable to them, I would think... that way once it's out, it's not THEIR bandwidth being sucked dry!
I've personally found most other methods useless. IRC is a waste, as you get bumped off on a whim, and LONG waits. WinMX is good at finding "rare" files and more results, but again, LONG waits. Direct Connect fails because of no good centralized way to search multiple servers, and because the share requirements are bigger than most people's drives! Ultimately, Kazza(lite) is the best of all, the only problem with it is finding precicely what you want via search. And Sig2Dat takes care of this by eliminating that step.
Sig2dat is absolutely perfect, if we could just get more of those "certified" "rated" sites up (HINT) -
Glad to see that my original post is getting back to the topic
Sig2dat can be used to download files, that may not show up in a search. So apart from not getting fakes, it can also produce better results.
Just a further comment, a lot of people [ftc] are complaining about leechers (Someone who downloads, but never uploads) in other words they don't share the sweets
Did you ever have those people at your school, you would give them half your lunch, but when ever they had a bag of sweets they never give you one ?
Then there are the cappers, they download at 1MB/s, but cap at 7K/s uploads set at 1, so you give someone a big bag of sweets Monday, but on Tuesday they give you 1 chew
So for "ALL" your leechers out there, including the 56k users, if this is to work, start sharing and stop capping. if the upload is taking all your bandwidth, then you need to dump your 56 V92 and get broadband quickly
Oh, and lets be careful out there -
two pages of posts and replies and I read through (most of) it
It was a personal victory of mine...
anyway I didn't see anyone talking about direct connect, one of my favorites right next to FTP
In a nutshell i call it an IRC File Share Combo. the users connect to servers, in this case called hubs. The hub owners sometimes dedicate it to Movies, Mp3, appz, warez, or just to a specific topic like Sci Fi. I can find a Hub for anything I need. The downside to this : the share. some hubs ask for a minimum of 5gb of share, others go as far as 50gb.
There are even operators, determined by the hub owner, who keep the users with fake or useless share out of the picture
U can find the info about the program at www.neo-modus.com there's also another client called dc++ that can be found at www.sourceforge.net -

If your ISP gives you 1025 download and 512k upload, then you should set NO limits, even if someone was able to reach your maximum upload, you would still have 512K download available.
Ok the leecher is suppose to be someone who has no files at all
cut them off !!!, or if the have zero byte files, cut them off !!!
But try to be fair with other settings, if your not downloading at all, why not run it with no restrictions.
My settings, I have no restrictions apart from those set by my ISP -
I have to concur with rplant, I have 512/128k If i dont put any restrictions on my uploads I soon have dozens of people downloading from me and I loose my connection so I cannot download anything. If i set a restriction to max 3 uploads at a time, it means the people downloading from me are getting a decent speed, and I can still download myself.
Craig -
rplant maybe it wasn't even your fault. I once started a download at about 30kbs (wich is great, I have a 256kb cable line). I noticed that the user was marked as having a 56kb line. Reasons for this ?
A) My computer was possesed by the devil
B) His computer was possesed or his modem was high on steroyds
C) He lied!
Some hubs keep the users with 56kbs out, some only take in users with lines higher than cable etc.
U might have found a user with too many people downloading from it. I've seen people with cable lines and a total of 20(or more) slots. I tried to download some files and went as high as 5kbs...
Also, dc++ seem to go easier on the resources allowing faster downloads. But due to some fuctions dc++ has, that the regular client lacks, some hubs keep it out.
About the restrictions ... well even taking into consideration what's been said i think some restrictions are always in order. Those 512kbs of upload speed sometimes end up divided among the users downloading taking their transfer rate down in the process. This is what I think might have happened to rplant. Still, restrictions should be decided by each user individually. Some people might want to share 80gb of files both in Kazaa and in a private FTP server, in this case I'd put some restrictions to ensure the FTP users got some fair Kbs since in kazaa the users can download from more than one location. -

Setting a limit on the number of people would mean those 3 people would have the 128K available divided by 3, if they had broadband that is. But if the limit was set to 10, then 10 people would have the same available, 1 of those people could be on Broadband and the other 3 on 56K, so the broadband user could take it all, but that makes no difference to your performance.
Admit ityou want the best download speed as possible, and don’t care what you have to do to get it
-
No not true at all, all i know is that if I have the numbers of uploads set to unlimited I cannot download at all. I have software that monitors server status and as soon as I set the uploads to unlimited they all go offline. I know upload and download speeds are not supposed to effect one another, I am not saying I understand why this happens, it just does. So what do you suggest ? I unlimit my upload speed so everyone can download from me, but I can download nothing. Well pardon my French, but "**** That" !
Oh, and if you look at my computer details the specs are listed.
And I share plenty I have got about 70 full length quality 700Mb divx films shared.
Craig -
Both opinions might be right. My guess is that the problem resides in the program itself: when it gets swamped with uploads to other users our downloads or the connect information for them get lagged thus timming out. this would of course depend of the line used. cable lines would surely be more affected due to the fact that they share bandwidht with the rest of the users in the area that share that ISP.

On NTL you should have no problems uploading at maximum and downloading at maximum, are these new cable lines or old CW or other cable lines that NTL took over ?
What connection do you have. I use Imesh on 512k broadband, and most of the time my downloads are running at the limit of my modem speed. 60-75kB/s. -
cutemx was never the shit for people with 56k.
I never downloaded anything, I was always cut off dileratly, I even took the SN"s and complained to the company.
Remember Napster? God I loved Napster. -
"Learn how to use the program"
I use KazaaLite after trying edonkey2000, overnet, shareaza, and morpheus. My version is 1.72. I am apparently overlooking or just not finding a guide for using the correct "settings" on KazaaLite. I am not interested in negative comments or flaming any particular p2p network. I think it's just cool that this stuff is available on the net. My settings are:
Max simultaneous dloads-10
" " uploads-2
Max search-200
Max. Bandwidth in KBs to be used for others to transfer-unlimited
NOT checked-do not function as a supernode
Checked-use max bandwidth when idle
No filter
Checked-Filter due to firewalls & filter bogus music and video files
What settings should I change and what else do I need to maximize my dload times? Also I notice when I see a description of a file there are comments about the file at the bottom. How is that done?
Thanks-this forum ROCKS!!! 8) -
Well its not really my place to tell people what they should do, just having a bit of fun with the leechers out there
Kazaa Lite comes with "pseudotr.exe" this should be used to configure your settings, heck set the search at 9999999
It also comes with "Speed Up" that should be running at all times, it will make a huge difference to your download speeds as it constantly looks for more sources.
The files you share can be edited by selecting "My kazaa" from there you can "Edit" the details of each file. Keywords, comments etc -
Make sure you always have the latest version of Kazaa lite, as the old version will become very slow and will eventually stop.
-
Participation Level, got the hack ?
kazaa_cheater_1.3.exe
Or download from yourself
