  2. I've had the same problems with nero, especially when I'm splitting one movie into 2 DVD-R's (movie only). Try this (it's worked for me)

    1) Using Nero V5.5.8.2, click on new compilation and select DVD UDF/ISO (instead of DVD Movie).

    2) Create two folders VIDEO_TS and AUDIO_TS
    3) Drag your movie files into the VIDEO_TS directory.
    4) Burn your DVD

I know it looks like you've done this before as it looks like the template for the DVD-Movie. But what I've found is this will prevent you from getting the error message "unable to allocate files" which prevents you from burning your DVD. If you're having problems email me at:

  3. Hey, I'm having a similiar problem. I have the Pioneer DVD-R 104. Using Nero, I've attempted using both DVD-Video and DVD UDF/ISO, both times, it tells me there's a "Communication Failure".

I noticed that you had mentioned that Recordmax and PrimoDVD worked. I don't have PrimoDVD because I didn't buy the A04, but is Recordmax freeware or is there at least a demo copy out there?

I haven't even actually attempted to actually write a DVD to disc, I've only run the Simulation. I've attempted to simulate an ISO DVD with a 1G file and still got the "Communication Failure". Any ideas or suggestions?

I currently have an IBM Deskstar 82G hard drive connected as Master on IDE-1 C:\ and the Pioneer DVDR 104 as Slave to IBM.
On IDE-2, I have the Toshiba DVD 16X drive as the reader.

    HELP!!!!

Try putting the Pioneer and Toshiba on the same IDE chain, one as master, the other as slave. It is generally a very bad idea to put any form of CD-ROM/DVD-ROM on the same IDE chain as a hard drive.

  6. Thanks for the suggestion, but no luck... I still got "Communication Failure" with DVD-R and DVD-ROM on same IDE cable...

Anymore suggestions, besides sending the drive back?

  7. the DVDR drive came with some software: CyberLink PowerDirector 2.1 DE

Is there a very slight possibility that this software needs to be installed for the drive to work?

  8. I have the 104 with the Nero OEM version and it works fine. Just rip the dvd and choose the nero option of dvd movie. Put all the files in the Video_Ts folder. I have had NO problems. I am using winxp. I have also had success with authoring and burning with Ulead DVD Studio with this burner. It works fine even with the generic dvd media.

Go to your Bios > CMOS setup disable " UltraDMA " of your Pioneer 104
enable pio mode. This work for me.

  10. Disabling DMA, either in Windows or BIOS will definitely solve this problem, but be careful as NERO is a bit defective in that way. Be sure to upgrade to 5.5.9!!!!! As it solves one important issue on creating DVD-Video with NERO

  11. I had the same problem with my 104 and nero. Changing the drive to PIO mode instead of DMA fixed it.

  12. I got fed with XP and decided to boot into Win98SE, I simulated the burn with no problems and then burned the DVD, so it seems to work fine with 98.

I don't know why people have this big tutorials on how to burn a DVD movie to DVD-R. All you need to do is use Smartripper with the "Backup" option, then burn all of those files in the VIDEO_TS folder either using UDF/ISO or DVD video with Nero.

Thanks a lot, to everyone for all your help!

  13. Well I just got my Pioneer A04 and I use Nero as well... but I believe the reasoning for all the tutorials is that 99% of the movies out there will not fit on a 4.7GB as is. Even if you just rip the movie it still won't fit. Most movies are just below 2 hours and just below is still too big. So the transcoding process and VOB work is the reasoning for all the tutorials. Am I missing something here?
