I hope I don't sound like a dumb newbie, but I can't seem to find it anywhere.

I know there's a dat-->mpg guide, but I really do prefer avi's. (they ARE better... right?)

I hope you guys can help me.

P.S. Which is the better audio codec for avi's: divX or Mpeg3?

First convert the .dat to .mpg with VCDGear, then feed the .mpg into VirtualDub.
You will loose the advantage to watch your video on a dvd player. A well encoded SVCD look better than DivX. When you convert mpg to divx, don't expect to increase the quality much, although you can use some good filters.
    For audio I prefer MPEG-1 Layer-3 (.mp3).
